Tournament Report - 2E - Deep Space 9 Regional |
2016-04-09 - 10:00 AM |
Ooooo Shiny (Orbs)! |
Introduction |
Today was the Deep Space Nine regional championship for 2E. I decided to play the Blessed Bajor deck I had built back in January, mostly because it's the only one I have put together. I grabbed the design from Oliver Thust and then modified to suit my own play style. It's a Blessed Bajor Orb/Artifact/microteaming extravaganza. I decided that I should wear my Starfleet uniform (TOS science blue) today, since there are always a lot of cosplay folks around. That, and I was inspired by Josh Sheets' mentioning of Steve Nelson's Doctor Who costume from years gone by. |

Round 1 | | Eric Bieche | FW (+65) |
Eric built a new Borg deck and then proceeded to leave it on his kitchen table. This meant I was very familiar with the Borg deck he was playing; an AQ Annexation Drone download special. This is the one where he uses YABMF to get all his Annexation Drones, At What Costs and a ship out in one turn. I got out ahead of him by quickly scooting through the Denorios Belt. He went to Wolf 359 to try to Assimilate Resistance. I brought his first attempt to a halt with two choice Oracle's Punishment stops and WNOHGB. That got me the first nasty looks of the day. I think I went on to Off-World Raid from there.
Eric completed Assimilate Resistance and took Odo out of my discard pile for his team. This led to an interesting dilemma dilemma for me while I was building one combo for his next mission attempt. I pulled Secret ID and Ominous Presence on this one. As I'm looking at his team for Secret ID, I was torn - do I Secret ID Odo to get him back or do I hit Locutus, so Eric can't get 10 points using him for Ominous Presence. I finally decided on Locutus. He gets stopped on that attempt, and it's my turn. I finish Off-World Raid and move onto Aid Lost Colony. I fail the first attempt and Eric starts on his next attempt. I hit him with Intimidation, which should just read, "You're boned if you're playing Borg." All stop and the second dirty look of the day. Time is called just as I start my turn, and I think I double-teamed Aid Lost Colony for the full win, 100-35. |

Round 2 | | Brian Leonard | FW (+25) |
Brian was playing his TNG DipHoLe microteaming deck with Mot and Vic Fontaine to reduce dilemma draws and counters. I've played against this deck quite a bit and know that filtering people is pretty much useless. EVERYONE has diplomacy, so don't even think about trying to fritter them away. He wasn't playing with TCS (obviously), so it was game on with the microteaming. I attempted Denorios Belt once, and ended up with one under. My next attempt had only Bareil and Dax and I used Accession to get out Opaka. He drew one he couldn't play and I completed. I believe I used Accession one other time this game, but I don't remember the circumstances. This game was a game of speed and strategy. I remember one of his mission attempts where I played an over-costed dilemma in the stacked on purpose because I was sure he'd use Kirk on the 2nd dilemma. No dice. He didn't Kirk at all, so the last dilemma, which is the one I really wanted him to face, was overcosted. Oh well. Anyway, I worked my way through my two planet missions and eked out a 100-75 full win. |

Round 3 | | Al Schaefer | FW (+40)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
So, I was assuming that I was going to be going head-to-head vs. Casey for this last round, but while I was duking it out in the microteaming world championship, Eric narrowly defeated him after time was called. Wait a minute! You mean I'm the only undefeated player? This meant I had a bit of a head-scratching time doing the pairings because I had to figure out who was playing who and who couldn't play each other. After a number of tries to get random selections generating the match-ups, I ended up playing against Al. He was playing a classic KRiS build. He too was not playing TCS, so it was game on again for the microteam.
This was the Round of Equipment. All the orbs were coming out to play. I pulled off a similar Accession completion of Denorios Belt, this time with 4 people on my initial attempt. I think I had the help of the Orb of Prophecy and Change for this one, switching in someone for Navigation, I think. I was moving people all over the place. They'd succumb to Secret ID and then pop back in with Orbs.
The clutch play against Al was on his first attempt of Investigate Alien Probe. I got Skeleton Crew, Insurrection and An Issue of Trust. It took him at least 3-4 attempts to get through. He decided to crop dust Cardassia IV in the middle of those attempts with a team of 4 and I slaughtered him with Unfair Terms (buh-bye Kahmis!). He finally completed both missions and went on to Brute Force. He attempted with 9 and I hit him with Secret ID and Intimidation. I weeded out Riker, who was replaced with a Klingon. All Klingons. Time was called. I went 2nd, so finished off my turn. Microteamed Off-World Raid. I had two ships, so somehow managed to ferry all my people and equipment to Aid Lost Colony. I had twelve people, double-teamed the mission and won. That game was crazy. |
Maggie was playing neu-Bajor with one space mission and 3 planet. Almost all of the personnel she played early on had Diplomacy, so I wouldn't be stopping her in space with Gomtuu. She had a tough time finding a ship early, but I couldn't take advantage because her dilemma pile had a TON of weenie-hate and I had only played my cheap guys early, not finding the more expensive (but discounted) past Klingons. When my cheap team got sent Where No One Has Gone Before, I was able to play the higher cost Klingons, but they were Outclassed when I sent them on the D-7. Falling behind more and more, I tried to send the cheap team to Rescue Prisoners while the Past team was stuck Investigating an Alien Probe. Unfortunately, the Cheap team met their destiny when they ran into some Unfair Teams. My dilemma pile was running slim, and I was running out of tricks (and time) to beat the Bajorans. On my next (final) turn I finished Alien Probe, microteamed (and solved) Rescue Prisoners, and macro-teamed Brute Force with no Sword in play. Maggie played Secret ID on Riker followed by Intimidation which stopped my whole team. When I pulled someone out of my 4-card draw deck for Riker, I noticed Bridge Officers Test was still in there and realized I hadn't been using Mara all game to get useful interrupts like those in my hand. Maggie won in overtime as I was unable to stop the Bajorans and secure the True Tie. |

Closing Thoughts |
Bareil is key to this deck. Without him, microteaming is impossible. I didn't get to use the orbs as much as I thought I would, but I think the Orb of Contemplation is the best one. The Xhosa is sneaky good, too.
After the tourney we had a great time eating out together. Mike Burke even came along! Thanks to everyone who came out today. I had a great time! |
