Romulan Surprise ver IV |
Introduction |
First time playing with an online deck (apart from the one test game against Nick that we never finished ... but two hours into playing we sort of had the hang of it).
Never used Lackey before... apologies in advance to all my opponents!
Gonna go for a deck that I am familiar with... |
|
Round 1 | | Jeremy Huth | FW (+30) |
vs Jeremy Huth.
Jeremy was playing a Bajoran small team attempt deck which was very similar to the deck Nick was playing in our test Lackey game! Excellent research Doug!
Dual Homeworld (Romulus) as well ... but just for an achievement (which worked well with my Dilemmas!).
Transport Crash Survivors prevented Jeremy from using super small teams...
This game went right to the wire ... if I hadn't won it Jeremy would have on his next turn as I'm pretty sure there were no dilemmas left in my pile that I could have played.
Thanks for a great game Jeremy.
Kudos to me for winning my first competitive Lackey game! |

Round 2 | | Matt Kirk | FW (+35) |
vs Matt
Deja Vu... Matt was playing a Bajoran/Romulan dual homeworld - but was using Roumlus to power a N'vek/P'Tol card draw engine. Also meant he could get Data into play for the good stats. I was a little worried about this.
However, Transport Crash Survivors kept the attempts big and dual homeworld helped with Final Adventure.
Once again this went to the wire ... Matt would have won if he had had the chance... my teams cheated thru the dilemmas as best they could... which was enough for another win!
Thanks for a great game Matt.
Kudos to me for beating someone on the design team!

Round 3 | | Charlie Plaine | FW (+65) |
vs Charlie Plaine
Non-Aligned Thief powered deck of Strangeness. I has no idea what to expect. the only other time I have seen a thief deck was the 2004 UK Nationals... which I won with an essentially similar deck as this one.
When it comes down to it I got very lucky to draw the right Dilemmas to stop Charlie. eg Charlie attempted with 6, 7 dilemmas under (Tragic Turn in play), I burn an Endangered to draw and spend 2 - I drew Overwhelmed in those 2 ... put another six dilemmas under.
Lucky! I think that about sums up my side of the game.
Thanks for a great game Charlie.
Even more kudos to me for beating the bloke who runs STCCG! |

Round 4 | | Johannes Klarhauser | FL (-85)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
vs Johannes
Ah yes... Evil Johannes.
Defected from Team London a few years ago. Nice friendly Team London ... we taught him everything he knows!
And what does he do? Eh? Well... let me tell you.
He goes and builds this namby pamby two-mission winning, walks through everything I throw at it Fed & Cadet deck.
Where is the gratitude ? The respect ? The love ?
Mutter Mutter, Grumble Grumble.
Things to learn from this game :
1. Romulans without Treachery are like Mulder without Scully. Utterly pointless.
2. Space Dilemmas don't work so well when played at Planet Missions.
Good game ... Thanks Johannes.
I'll have my revenge at the UK Nationals!
I have a great idea for a deck... |
In the fourth and final game, I finally got my first Historical Research download! With both Picard and the Enterprise in hand, but not a single Cadet at all, I decided to go grab Wesley for a laugh. I would have loved to get a second Commander or Tallera out to increase my chances at scoring extra points, but no luck there.
Doug P+P in play on his first turn, but he didn't draw into a Senator until late in the game, and only used it once. GUYS was on the table next turn, too, and he immediately scored bonus points from it on consecutive turns. He got one At What Cost? to go, but I cancelled another one (unfortunately, this meant I had to destroy my Engineering Padd, which I would have love to keep around for Scotty as protection against the 8-coster dilemma I expected to see).
Doug attempted first with 8 personnel. I played Pitching In (both stops were prevented by the stooges)/Well-Prepared Defenses/Hard Time to stop him.
On my turn, my crew of nine personnel faced Tragic Turn/A Royal Hunt/Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?/Don't Let it End this way for 2 stops and 2 kills. Miraculously, my remaining five personnel included three Cadets, all the skills and Cunning of exactly 37 thanks to Enterprise-J. Picard, however, was stopped, so I scored only 45 points from this mission (the only time this happened in this tournament). I flew back home and ended my turn.
My Hard Time took out one of Doug's mission skills, so he had to replay and fly his ship home, as he didn't had enough high-cost Romulans out yet to fly his Bird-of-Prey back and forth.
On my turn, I played two more Cadets and Data, and drew a lot, looking for either Guinan or Tallera to score extra points. With 10 guys in play, I kept my good guys on the ship and sent 5 Cadets and Relic Scotty on a suicide mission. Another combo starting with Tragic Turn killed two people, but left several dilemmas under.
Doug played Rekar and Data, then attempted his space mission again. Knowing he only had 2 Treachery personnel in play, I played He Wasn't Nice to kill The Viceroy to stop the mission attempt.
I then played a new copy of Lwaxana Troi, who had been killed earlier, to mill through my deck with two copies of These Are The Voyages and two more Trellium-Ds, but I still couldn't find either a Tallera or Guinan! I decided to attempt Restore Errant Moon with a 'real' tean anyway, and got lucky, as Doug couldn't play any dilemmas. This put me on 95 points, but out of Range. So I burned two copies of Fajo's Menagerie to dl some Engineering Padds and draw a total of six cards for my three Trellium-Ds, but still no Guinan (I had cycled through more than 25 cards that turn!). With 16 cards in hand, I decided to grav-trap Doug's Endangered and Getting Under Your Skin, then discarded down. 20 cards left in my deck now.
Doug finally played a Praetor/Senator, and scored 5 points (top card was an Unexpected Difficulties, still no Guinan), then attempted his space mission again. I played only In Development, which did the trick and stopped Hiren (who had the second Treachery for Investigate Sighting).
I started my turn by playing my last copy of These Are The Voyages, drawing 6 more, finally drew Guinan, and played her to put me on 100 points. |
