A Tribute to Jojo |
Introduction |
It's been a year this month since my wife, Joanne, passed away. I thought it would be nice to bring out one of her favorite deck designs from storage. The deck I used and modified a little was a Slipstream deck. It was designed to score 15 or more bonus points and solve a 35 point mission for a one mission win.
I just planned on using the same principle for a 100 point, two mission win. I updated her deck a little to my liking, but it's probably 85% - 90% Joanne's design. |

Round 1 | | Sean O'Reilly | FW (+60) |
Playing against Sean is always a challenge. He is sharp and really knows the cards. Sean's deck was, as far as I could tell, just a mission solver. If he had attack cards, I don't recall seeing any come out. He did use a lot of Treachery Klingons, so that made my copies of the dilemma, An Issue of Trust pretty effective. We both just took turns attampting our missions until one of us, me, reached winning conditions. I was able to get out three Distant Exploration to go on Terok Nor and a Debate Over Dinner for my first mission.
The bonus points allowed for a two mission win, as designed. I think Sean was working on his second misson too. The thing that made it possible was none of my events were destroyed. Otherwise, I suspect that Sean would have won. |

Round 2 | | David Blauvelt | FW (+30) |
This was the first time I had met and played against David. David had a Relativity deck going with a ton of events. It took him a little while to draw enough personnel to attempt his first mission. That gave me time to get my Distant Explorations and Debate Over Dinner into play.
David's dilemma pile was very effective and many of his dilemmas were not overcome. The result was on my first mission, that after three attemps, I only had one dilemma overcome. Hard to solve missions that way. So we both kept plugging away, not interacting with each other or anything. Again, I was able to win with two missions while David was working on his third. |

Round 3 | | Thomas Kamiura | FL (-100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
The game against TK was another lesson in 2E. He used a very fast Past Klingon mission solver. His opening hand was great. I think he got all his good guys into play right away, Kang, Kor, Koloth and his weenie Klingons that have the odd skills needed for his space mission (odd in that they aren't Leadership or Security). He was able to play most of them at a reduced cost due to their Past Icon ability.
Going into the tournament, I expected him to be playing his Tragic Turn/All Consuming Evil dilemma pile. It had decimated me last week, so I brought in all my ETUs and a couple of Escapes to try to survive it. A downside to my using Distant Explorations is that it reduces the amount of consummed dilemmas by one each time. But I know I would face enough of them that it really wouldn't matter. I would still end up with a lot of overcome dilemmas under the mission. A slight advantage to this effect is reducing the odds of hitting All Consuming Evil.
I guess the idea sort of worked because I think TK only killed two of my people the whole game. I was able to remain staffed and TK had recently had to discard a copy of Point Blank Strike so didn't have one in play to come Kruge me. It was on my space mission which I was attempting without Exobiology, just in an effort to get some dilemmas under the mission. That part worked fine, except the two people he killed had the Leadership I needed for the mission. I failed to realize that when I made my next attempt. TK used Uninvited for something, but I don't remember what it was. I stll had enough attributes to do the mission afterwards, but failed the mission because I didn't have the Leadership. TK won the game in like twenty minutes or so. I didn't solve anything and took a pasting. Joanne will now haunt TK until I beat him. :-) |
Rick was playing a deck his late wife built so it had some sentimental value to him. This was the quickest game of the day. I don't believe I interacted at all. Just straight mission solved. Play of the game was me attempting IAP with 9, hitting just P-Duty, and Rick stopping 5. I use Worf to unstop a Honor Klingon and solve the mission. Downhill from there.
Rick attempts his space mission where he stuck a debate over dinner (LoL - considering my dilemma deck). He attempts it without having Exobiology in the crew (which was a mission requirement). He's stopped after hitting my kill pile. He regroups and attempts again without Leadership this time (which was a mission requirement). He fails again.
Rick might have had 6 people and a ship in play when this game ended.
Rick gets TK'd. 100-0. |

Round 4 | | Daniel Matteson | FL (-50)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Dan was playing an OS deck and getting the extra card draw with his HQ. On top of that, he was able to play Surprise Party from his opening hand, so he basically had a two counter advantage over me every turn. Rats.
Same gameplay as before, we left each other alone and did our mission attempts. I was able to get my events out, and they weren't destroyed. Cool. I don't remember any big events or happenings until the last play of the game. Dan was on his third mission and I was on my second. It was late in the game with only about 8 or 10 minutes left I think. Dan attempted space and I used a filter and wall combo. The filter took at a couple and the wall required three Geology. Dan only had one Geology and no cheater cards to share skills. Unfortunately for me, the one Geology was John Harriman. He used his ability on himself to give himself two more Geologies to overcome the dilemma and solve the mission for the win. We all checked and double checked the rules and wording of the cards and it appears this was a valid and legal thing to do. Congratulations to Dan on the win. |
Rick's first comment at seeing ALC: "Well that's the mission I hate to see." Rick was playing a Terok Nor/Dominion combo with lots of events to earn him bonus points for a likely two mission win. I had an early jump on this game by playing Surprise Party on turn one, though I struggled a little drawing into mission skills. I did manage to get both ALC and Alien Probe done but Rick had solved his first mission for 50 points. Well on my way to solving my third and final mission with 12 minutes left in the round, I cleared all dilemmas but the last one: Breaking the Ice. I had just one Geology (on Harriman) but I attempted to use his own ability on himself twice to give him two more Geology. It took four people conversing over this and checking the rules to finally decide it was a legal play. I got through and solved the mission for the win. |

Closing Thoughts |
TK won the tournament, we all knew that was going to happen before anyone sat down. Well, maybe David didn't know. The games were fun, interesting and a little controversial (my game against Dan). We played in a new venue at a game store in lieu of Dan's appartment due to mechanical difficulties with his A/C.
Dan had nice prize support and I had a good time. It was nice meeting David from out of town, and hearing about his STCCG adventures. We should do it again next year! |
