Tournament Report - 2E - Cardassia Regional

DominionKlingonDominion-Klingon strength
Introduction
This deck build for the Orlando Regional was a different one than I've used before. I played a Ferengi deck yesterday at the Palm Bay Regional, and didn't do too well with it. I could have done better, but luck of the draw got the best of me in that one. This tournament went a little better, but again luck of the draw in my second match did me in. This deck used both the old Founder's Homeworld and the Klingon HQ. I was able to get a boatload of high-strength people into play pretty fast, and with the mission skill requirements being fairly easy, things mostly went well for me.

Round 1DominionStarfleetJohn KinneyFW (+60)
Playing against John's Starfleet deck, I got off to a pretty good start. John was playing with two HQ's and I had the mission that gives you another turn after your first turn when your opponent goes with multiple HQs, so yay, I got to go again! My space mission was the first thing on my to-do list and I went through John's dilemmas without too much trouble. I solved that mission in either one, or two tries, I'm not sure now. At any rate, I did space before he could, to deprive him of his HQ bonus points. Then it was off to Rescue Prisoners and I solved that easily as well. John started to catch up during my third mission doing Brute Force. He was able to complete one mission and was working on his second when I finished up my last mission for the full win, 100 - 40.

Round 2TNGJoseph BazemoreML (-100)
Things went really bad for me against Joe. It wasn't his deck, but my lack of getting a ship until more than half-way into the game that spelled doom for me. Running the dual HQ's, I was only pulling Dominion ships, while the staffing personnel I was getting were Klingon. I couldn't get a gold star for the Dominion ships to save my life. After around 35 minutes I finally pulled a Klingon ship and was able to at least start attempting missions. Joe had played the Pheonix using Commandeer Prototype, meaning I also needed an extra 10 points now. So, in at least a small victory of sorts, I Kruge'd it and turned the table on him, making it necessary for him to get the extra 10 points for the full win. So, even though he won 100 - 0, it was only a modified win. At least that was kind of cool.

Round 3CardassianDaniel MattesonFW (+50)
I had lost a close game to Daniel yesterday at his Palm Bay Regional and really wanted to get the win here. I pulled Drex and a ship early and was able to kill a couple of his people on his HQ before he could get them safely on a ship. His Cardassian deck used some capture tricks to take some of my people and kept me from running away with the game. Still, I was able to do my missions without too much difficulty, while using my Chula dilemma pile to keep him at bay for a good part of the game. He was going for a two mission win with bonus points, so I needed to keep that second mission from being completed. Fortunately for me, the Chula's kept doing their thing and I held him off long enough to get the full win, 100 - 70.

Round 4StarfleetTed ReebelFW (+30)
My game against Ted was another one I wanted to win as he took me to the cleaners yesterday in Palm Bay. He was playing the same Starfleet deck he had used the day before, but that was against Ferengi. This one wouldn't be so easy. The Chula pile pretty much kept Ted from breezing through his missions. He hit me with Chulas as well, so it was kind of back and forth for us. My personnel hung on though to plow through all three of my missions before Ted could. This was close enough that it could have gone either way. I did get the full win, 100 - 70. Oh, and by the way, I hate Phlox.

Closing Thoughts
I've got to say, even though this is my first time using Chula The Game, I found it pretty effective and can see why it is so popular. I also have to think the deck mostly worked due to the ease of my missions and the strength of my personnel. At least today, they worked the way I hoped they would, with the exception of my not getting a ship against Joe. That can be fixed though.
