K'mpec Klingon deck Atlanta Masters |
Introduction |
I never build complicated decks and this one is no exception. I was hoping to be able to simply dump a lot of Klingons into the game and overpower the dilemmas to solve three pretty easy Klingon missions. It was okay in theory, but of course opponents have a way of tossing Monkey Wrenches into the works to gum things up.
The deck uses K'mpec to get an extra 5 counters each turn you use him, and I try to do that for three or four turns. That gives me the people and ships I need to do multiple attempts on the same turn. |

Round 1 | | Nic Brautigam | FL (-35) |
Nic always has really good decks that I can never beat. He did it again today with a solid 2-mission TNG solver. I was able to hold him off for a few attempts at his first mission, but he was doing the same to me. I was able to get K'mpec out early and start spending the extra counters. Unfortunately, each turn I do that, six of my personnel are sitting around not doing anything. Nic kept going at it and I wasn't able to hold him off from doing both his missions first. Another solid game from Nic and a full loss for me. |

Round 2 | | Brandy Corbett | FW (+70) |
Brandy was playing a TNG deck that I think was the one I faced in the side event the day before. I was able to get the extra counters thing working pretty fast so started loading up personnel. We took turns attempting our missions and being stopped, but with as many counter as I had, I was able to play the deck the way I intended for it to play and got the full win. |

Round 3 | | Michael Schwartz | FL (-40) |
Michael was doing some Bluegill tricks and kept me off balance for pretty much the whole game - he really pumped up the attributes of his personnel. I felt like I had a chance at this one, but it wasn't meant to be. The best I could try to do was to maybe hold him to a true tie but I wasn't able to stop him on his last mission attempt at the end of the game. Michael got the full win, dropping me to 1 and 2. |

Round 4 | | Constance Corbett | FW (+100) |
Constance had her Klingon deck with the Tragic Turn/All Consuming Evil dilemma pile that I also had to face at the side event yesterday. This is a very solid deck and the dilemma pile can be vicious. I didn't have any ETUs today so was really concerned with every mission attempt. As expected, she started killing my personnel but not as fast as I could replace them. I was able to put enough personnel into the game to get through each mission on my second attempt - thanks to all the consumed dilemmas. This let me get the full win putting me at 2 and 2. |

Round 5 | | Joshua Sheets | FL (-40) |
Josh had a (in my opinion) complicated Borg deck that was taking my personnel left and right. It felt like he had as many of my Klingons as he did Borg! We stayed pretty close throughout the game but I couldn't keep him at bay long enough for me to get a victory. Hats off to Josh on this one, he deserved a win for this deck. Full loss for me, but a fun game. I like playing in games where people make good use of an affiliation's abilities. |

Closing Thoughts |
This was the first Masters I played in. I didn't feel too much pressure as I'm not a die-hard player as much as I am a casual one. So for me, this was a lot of fun. I enjoy meeting and playing with new people and this tournament provided exactly that. Everyone was very friendly and we all seemed to have a good time. Congratulation to Greg for winning the 2E Masters, the guy really knows his stuff (and your stuff too!). |
