Borg V-starter 2016 OrlAndorian League Playoff |
Introduction |
This is a basic virtual starter deck with the addition of three Call to Arms and one Reflections booster packs. It was a sealed deck tournament so we were allowed to have more that three copies of the same card and could tweek our decks between rounds.
I chose this affiliation for the tournament to get me one step closer to the play ten achievement for the Counterpart badge. |

Round 1 | | John Kinney | MW (+50) |
Playing against John's deck was actually pretty annoying. He was constantly taking advantage of Enrique Muñiz that comes in the DS-9 starter. In addition, he was able to keep giving me dilemmas that the Borg can't deal with, requiring Honor, Law, etc. I was able to pull a Locutus in one of my packs though, and that did help. Still, it was a close game and if not for my very lucky dilemma draws at the end of the game, I could have had a full loss. As it turned out, I was able to hold on for a modified win, 90 - 40. |

Round 2 | | Martin Drake | FW (+30) |
Martin really made this a close game. He actually had the game on his last mission attempt but again, I got lucky with my random dilemma selection and picked out his one copy of Navigation he needed for the win. That gave me an opportunity to complete my third mission for a full win, 100 - 70. I really should have lost that game. |

Round 3 | | Sean O'Reilly | FL (-30) |
Sean played a great game with what turned out to be a pretty good deck. He had some good pulls in his booster packs and was able to load up Storage Compartment and use it against me with devastating results on my last mission attempt. I went to a space mission with nine Borg on board and he killed four of them and stopped me in the process.
The coolest thing that happened was that he used Caretaker's Guests to put Locutus on top of my deck on my turn. Then on his next turn, he played Davin to make me discard the top card, which of course, was Locutus! Pretty cool combo. I did get him back with A Second Chance at Life, but it wasn't enough to stop Sean from getting the full win over me, 100 - 70. |

Closing Thoughts |
The Borg virtual starter deck needs to be updated. They need a little help with the skills that are required on many of the dilemmas that come in the other virtual starter decks. As it is, it is very easy to stop and kill the Borg since their limitations are so well known.
This was the last 2E tournament of the OrlAndorins 2015/2016 League, and it was a lot of fun. People don't give sealed deck tournaments enough credit. I like that it really evens out the playing field and you never know who is going to come out on top (unless you're playing Borg, then you have a pretty good idea it won't be you). |
