Tournament Report - 2E Sealed |
2010-09-12 - 12:00 PM |
Introduction |
Hello and Welcome to my first Tournament Report. The Sealed Deck tournament held at my house. With the ~$20 purchase of a Premier Combo Box, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to get some new players.
I Contacted TSolway who was a registered 2E player in the area and let him know the event was going to happen and that he may be called upon to help teach some new players. He was very excited at the idea of a group starting up in our area and was more than happy to bring some donation cards.
I set out have a nice demo game ready to show the new players. Using borg and dominion start decks, I set out a "game in progress" on the table to use as an example of cards types and what the play area would look like.
The tournament was scheduled to start at 12pm. With only TSolway there at 12:10, we decided to have a game while we waited for other players to arrive. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as we were able to use this game demonstrate to the new players as they arrived. As the game was just for fun we were able to show turn sequences and dilemma selection tips.
At around 1pm, one player still had yet to arrive. After a brief phone call reminder it was decided that Gauntlet would have to miss the drafting portion of the tournament and be stuck with the cards in his packs and starter so that we could get under way. He showed up just as we were opening our 3rd packs.
Each of the four other players selected a different starter so the drafting would be nice and friendly. This was another added bonus to the new players. After explaining the difference between [DS9] and [TNG] we were ready to pass the cards around the table. The Klingon draws were incredible, with Valhallis pulling Kor, Kang and Duras and Lursa. My DS9 was also looking good with Bashir, Jadzia and Odo.
I was glad we had done the sealed deck like this as it gave the players a chance to build a stronger foundation of card collection by focusing on one affiliation. I also love that the players got a taste of deckbuilding. We talked about ratios of personnel to ships, and skill redundancy.

Round 1 | | Bye | BY (0) |
Lucky enough and As I hoped I got a bye in the first round. I was hoping for this so that i would not be distracted and could answer any questions the new players would have, (without any direct advice). I commend the new players though, they seemed to pick it up very quickly.
I was amazed to see two new players arrive at a True Tie 35-35. seemed perfect.
After the round I was able to give them some pointers on their deck building. I know this may seem unfair since I was going to be playing against those decks in the coming rounds, but I assure you it was entirely to improve their decks.
The best advice was to elimate the Cry Havocs and render assistances. It seemed unlikely that, though fun as it may be, there would be any engagements or combat. |

Round 2 | | Valhallis | FW (+35) |
This was a great opportunity for me to teach a new player the importance of playing too many dilemmas. I was able to hit him twice with one dilemma that stopped his whole team and returned to my dilemma pile. I also learned that Enemy Boarding Party is a great dilemma to draft and play against DS9 as 3 of my personnel were killed. |

Round 3 | | Jason | MW (+35) |
The great showdown of DS9 vs DS9. The first couple turns seemed very similar. Play Siko, download a ship. Play a bunch of 1 cost 'weenies', rinse repeat. On turn 3 for each of us we set out to attempt a mission with 9 personnel. The game continued like that playing more and more personnel on both sides and getting more and more dilemmas under the missions.
Eventually the game came down to time running out. I had 2 completed space missions for 70 points and he had one completed space mission for 35 points. If he could solve a planet mission and stop me from getting my full win he would win.
Unfortunately for him, the dilemma pile was in my favor and I was able to stop his attempt.
But he also succeeded in stopping both of my away teams from completing the planet mission I needed. Well Played! |
