Vernal Equinox |
Introduction |
I wanted to try Equinox. I wanted to try the cool-looking new dilemma Overburdened. The deck grew from there as I tweaked it to qualify for some achievements. It's not very good, like my decks typically are, though it occasionally offered its entertaining moments.
To be fair, the deck has issues, but the bigger issues are with the operator. I know a more skillful player would have managed better - at least in game 3 and probably against MVB as well. |

Round 1 | | Michael Van Breemen | FL (-100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Brutal. Wiped out by a Maquis battle deck (paired with a Gomtuu / Greater Needs focused dilemma pile), 105 to 0. MVB scored 40 points with with the Gungan. I used Gem removed a Gomtuu, but he had two others in his small-ish dilemma pile. Exocomp repaired one, but he got them both on the Equinox, then use the Gungan (boosted ranged thank to Thomas Riker) and Point-Blank Strike to blow it up. He attacked a second Equinox for even more points. I destroyed one Bio Weapon, he played another. Gungan kept attacking, scoring him a total of 40 points and blowing up two Equinoxes. Other than my one early Exocomp, I couldn’t draw ship repair. It was pretty much hopeless. FL. |
Equinox was the name of the game so I had a slightly easier time thanks to their inherently low Integrity but then Gem showed up, naming Gomtuu. I got the Valjean into play followed by the Guingouin, eventually getting Thomas T-Bird Riker which was key since they were in the Delta Quadrant. He got hit by one Gomtuu but used Exocomp on it. I managed to get the last Gomtuu in the pile to hit again before blowing up his Equinox. I left the Guingouin with Riker onboard before sending the Valjean to eventually solving Advanced Battle Simulation. Thanks to the Equinox's low shields any engagement I played would damage his ship so I simply let Riker keep attacking his second Equinox while everyone else went to solve missions. I only solved Advanced Battle Simulation and Rescue Prisoners, using the Guingouin for the remaining points, eventually blowing up his second Equinox. It was also fun to not get anyone killed by Overburdened (which normally would never have happened in my kill pile.) |

Round 2 | | Kenneth Tufts | FW (+100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Huh, my initial tournament reports got deleted. Blah. FW for me 110 to 0. Ken was playing a pretty standard looking Terok Nor deck with a Legacy pile. There were two key moments in the game. My Ardent Predator got insanely lucky and selected Davin and Damar (the other four peeps in the attempt were Jemmies), killing both the command stars and destaffing Tenak'talar. The other key moment was when I passed Legacy, revealing three skill dilemmas to his two (plus another Legacy). I solved one mission on the second attempt, and the other two each on the first attempt. |
Lacky issues caused us to replay a few turns this game, then some really unlucky picks had Triumph walking through dilemmas, he freely admitted legacy should not fail vrs his dilemma pile, then he managed to pick the 2 6 str cardis out of my team of 6 the only combination that would make me fail the dilemma i knew was coming, that de-staffed my ship and ended my game. |

Round 3 | | Johannes Klarhauser | FL (-100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Johannes was playing a fairly generic-looking TOS solver with ALC (where have I seen that before? ;) ), plus a 160-odd card dilemma pile to grab the all-Premiere and all-Energize achievements. I effectively lost my first turn because I couldn't draw Equinox or Christening (one of which by all rights ought to show up in my first 10 cards). I played dilemmas very poorly, gambling on consume stuff that didn't work. If I had played more conservatively, aiming for minimum stops, I probably could have held him off a turn longer at each of his first two missions. FW for the Kaiser, 100 to 0. I got two dilemmas under, and that was it. |
All the pieces worked together. I captured Ransom on Triumph's first attempt, made him put four people under his deck with ALC, and killed Marla Gilmore with Evil McCoy so that he never had a really big crew in play and even my crappy dilemmas (Misguided Activist!) worked on occasion. |

Closing Thoughts |
Well, that was interesting. I probably won't ever play [VOY] again. LOL.
Overburdened is good enough to be worth splashing 1-of into non-Legacy piles - just don't play it until you've attempted at least once and got a sense of what your opponent's pile is like.
I finally understand the point of Bold Plan - it can take back two of the dilemmas it consumes! *mind blow, eyes opened, enlightenment achieved* No, I'm not a particularly smart player if I just now understood that. |
