Tournament Report - 2E - North American Continentals Day One |

Introduction |
FYI, this was a two day event all on the same day using the same deck, so my top 8 tournament report can be found there. So I've had a day to digest the event. A lot of my "big" decks have gotten nerfed in the past year (Big Borg, Council) and I didn't want to fall back on Romulans because everyone is playing or has played green -- so it's not that fun anymore. I went with a modified version of my DS9 Santa Barbara regional winner because I wanted to prove DS9 can compete with the big boys and was the most familiar with it given my recent lack of playing in general. |

Round 1 | | Earned Bye | EB (+100) |
Thanks TK for jobbing to me a few weeks ago. |

Round 2 | | Kenneth Tufts | FW (+95) |
First game and I sit down against the big bad Romulan-ALC-ACE deck that everyone claims is super overpowered. Well, his Viceroy came down turn 1 and I didn't play an event until my last turn (i.e. how you beat big Romulans). Without any downloads or AWCs to give him any offensive momentum he was WAY behind -- so far behind I got the Centaur and crew out, got a bunch killed, restaffed the Sao Paulo and crew, then walked through my last space mission. Meanwhile, he had to use points to fuel a turn 6? AWC and easily got slapped by successive Gomtuus while Power Shift sat there all lonely. Anyways, my last mission fell without giving him a mission. FW: 100-5. |

Round 3 | | bandana8472 | FW (+60)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Frid was playing TNG weenies, but my dilemma pile was designed to handle this deck. Nec Ex hit him early, Rogue Borg, Outclassed... I had an answer to nearly everything he did. Meanwhile, with no TCS my Centaur put my personnel in beast mode. The game was a full-on race -- really how the game is designed to be played -- and the game was decided by dilemma play meta choices. FW: 100-70? |
i ran good but alabama had vic and ran better. |

Round 4 | | Mike Harrington | FL (-40) |
Mike was playing TOS speed with a good dilemma pile based on Chula: The Game and pulling back dilemmas with McCoy and Shran. It felt like Mike beat me pretty handily, but looking back I did have two turns of attempts for a chance to win the game -- so I wasn't incredibly behind. What cost me was failing a wall to his Driven and being unable to handle a late game 2nd OT Kirk (the first I took out with an early Holding Cell he was able to nuke with Scotty). The funny play of the game was me playing back-to-back-stack Moral Choices expecting one to be Kirk'd. He didn't. FL: 60-100. |

Round 5 | | Kris Sonsteby | FL (-70)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Kris was playing TOS-ALC-ACE with a Telepathic Deception lockout. Scumbag. My deck has 1 Bio and 1 Exo I think (DS9 needs more skills -- ones with Command stars!). I tried to play the game too cute, and it cost me. Losing 2 personnel on Med Teams to a Scotty right when I needed them didn't help. I think I had 1 mission with the other 2 crop dusted when he finished me off. It was a very bad match-up for me, one I'm glad I didn't have to face again. FL: 30-100. |
The Alabama Slamma was piloting DS9, but dumped his lone Biology to the ALC bomb and never recovered. After Scotty knocked out a fully loaded Medical Teams mid-game, Driven powered me through an Optical Delusion at Find Lifeless World to notch the win over my remote protege. FW 100-30. |
|
Round 6 | | Preston Holida | MW (+30) |
At this point I am looking at going from being a lock into the Top 8 at 3-0 to suffering a complete collapse. Preston was playing the same draw deck as Frid (told me he copied it later), but had a bit more dilemma answers to my deck. This game was a grind. I put on a clinic on how to stop micro- and double-teams, but he was stopping me at will as well. Thus, despite us playing solvers we went to the time limit. Tied at 30-30, I had one last turn. Protect the Escapees was buried and Torga IV had two beneath. Rather than going full-go for the full win, I conceded to a weak attempt at Torga to a guarantee at PtE. I got the latter, but not the former. MW: 60-30. |

Closing Thoughts |
I squeaked into the top 8 at 4-2 with 1 MW and an earned bye. A tie in the last round would've landed me at #9 overall. With a big relief, I grabbed some food and prepared for a mirror/non-mirror match-up with Nat in Round 1 of "Day 2". |
