The Cost of Victory |
Introduction |
My third tournament (Regional) and I used a deck with my own cards that I designed. Went for something different with Cunning Dominion. Really pleased with the games I had. I never felt like I couldn't win in any of my games, which surprised even me. I had made some last minute 3am tweaks the night before, and it seemed to have been the perfect few card changes. It rocked better than ever! |

Round 1 | | Kris Sonsteby | ML (-30)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
His consume pile did not hit as hard as I expected, but I was still not doing my missions quick enough. The combo of cards I got, just didn't work out as well as I hoped. At No Cost coming too late, as well as Hurried Departure or Jem'Hadar Ambushes. The deck was okay in this game. I might have pulled a victory off in the end if I had time. Kris was having some difficulties with my dilemna's as well. But his TOS guys were getting through in the end. I had been throughin up walls he wasn't getting through at the beginning, but I couldn't keep it up. |
The Stampede Kid was working Dominion, though lost a Hurried Departure early via Matt Decker. Inexperience against my design cost us some time, as with him unable to attempt Explore Extradimensional World again and two crews loaded up to complete space, I likely would have scooped on my next turn. MW 70-40. |

Round 2 | | Bye | BY (0) |
I sat around and cut out Tribbles cards. |

Round 3 | | Mike Rudolph | FW (+100) |
Mike took too many risks when tossing me Dilemna's. I also had some of my extra points out, and Jem'Hadar ambushed him. I also walled him very solidly. He had no Geology or Diplomacy guys which really hurt him. The first mission I attempted (Explore Extradimensional World) I passed on my first go when he only threw me 1 dilemna. A very quick game and just some bad luck against a deck that ignores certain dilemna's, or where I intentionally leave certain skills at home when I go do certain missions. |

Round 4 | | Matthew Hayes | FW (+45)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
I won this game by the skin of my teeth. I had to get 2 Jem'Hadar Ambushes 2 turns in row on his away team on a planet. I did not have a Battleship out, so I could not win a space battle against the same ships (Jem'Hadar Warships).
Before I could get my last turn, Matthew attempted, and I was attempting able to stop somebody. I had a 50-50 chance that it would Odo, and he could spend 5 points and he could ignore it(or something like that). I chose the other guy, so he only had 4 getting through. And this was on a 2 card draw with 2 counters, and ONLY becauase I had my crew there already and Krajensky Founder giving me those extra 2. A very close game. |
Kyle was also running Dominion. His build was a good bit different than mine, even though we were rocking a lot of the same peeps, naturally. His tech to do a two mission kill, followed by two separate engagements from Jem'Hadar Ambushes, was neat. And the loss I took was not so unpalatable as the previous one. Another good player the game is richer for. I shall have my revenge on you next year, my good man! (at least, I'm gonna try, fingers crossed.) |

Round 5 | | Keith Morris | FL (-30)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Curse you Voyager! I hit hard in his first couple turns, hitting him with The Dreamer and the Dream twice. Once after using Biochemical Hyperacceleration. His skills were just too good for my dilemanas. So much Diplomacy, not enough cheap guys either to hit with Pitching In, and Caretaker's were no good after his first attempt b/c he had all his Chicote's in his discard pile, and I wanted to keep them there. My dilemn'as were just not good enough, and I was waiting a turn to attempt Explore Extradimensional world, when he got his last mission. If he had not won, I definitely had a chance of winning it on my turn. A very close game again. |
So with the standings as they were going into this game, either Kyle or I would win the tournament unless we went to time. I got of to a bit of a slow start getting hit by dreamer and the dream twice with pretty large hands. Kyle on the other hand got an easy 10 points for shooting voyager and played two at what costs. I was starting to get worried that I'd have to settle for third place, but I managed to hold Kyle of at his planet mission. Which worked out well since he couldn't attempt it next turn. I completed my final mission on that turn, with less than 5 minutes left. It doesn't really feel like a tournament win because I only finished ahead of Kris because Kyle is a newer player and had to read a lot of his cards against Kris, but not against my deck which he had played a against a few times. But a win is a win. First time winning my own regional. I think its about time to retire my voyager deck though and try something new. (Its gonna be sitting in my box though for the next time its needed to defend the home turf against invaders. |
