Introduction |
For a fun Wednesday, three-round tournament, I decided to try out the new Promenade School and Jaresh-Inyo. I added some Deploy the Fleets and Survey New World to try for multiple presidential summonses, and had a nice attribute bonus theme with Worf, Garak, and the Centaur. I also used Assess Contamination as my actual solving planet mission which was much better than even I originally expected. |

Round 1 | | BlAz3D | FW (+100) |
This was AJ's first tournament and were quite grateful for him coming out and giving us an even number of players. He's only played a few games before, but he had a good grasp of the game, and really only lacks experience. Things beyond mechanics that you only learn from repeated play, like attempting space first, checking your dilemmas for type as well as cost were little things that slowed him down against me, but the deck he build was solid, with good mission choices and sound dilemmas. Once he has a few tournaments under his belt, he'll be a good player. As it was, being his first opponent of his first tournament, he made a few crucial mistakes that allowed me to stop him while completing my own missions. It also gave me a chance to shake the mothballs out of my deck and see what really worked and what didn't in this weird design.
Won, 100-0. |

Round 2 | | Thomas Kamiura | FL (-30) |
If my game against Dan this weekend hadn't convinced me, playing against Terok Nor again against TK thoroughly convinced me that TN is just stupidly overpowered. Dug in and played a ton of people while he picked and picked with his six guys at Survey New World. I managed to solve my first mission, split my teams to send one to the other space mission and one to Assess Contamination, solved AC thanks to an overcome Moral Choice, and had the range to send THAT team to the second space mission for another attempt as well. I got three dilemmas under in two attempts and could solve with four, appearing to be in firm control of the game. Then TK solved his one mission with four guys, and between the ship and three Ruling Councils (my Holding Cell came out one turn too late), a 30 point mission becomes 70 points. I managed to stop him with two dilemmas at the planet. I have 65, and a nearly completed 30 pt mission, so I had to dig for a Defensive Upgrades, almost certain he would be able to cancel the Promenade School in my hand. Instead I drew an extra School, so I played one, had it canceled as expected, then played the other, and it got through. Unfortunately, that meant I had to stop all eight of my DS9 folk, but I still had four people who could solve, so I attempted. He draws and spends 1, and top decks a f#$%ing Magnetic Field Disruptions. Time was called turning my turn and I went first, so this is where playing for the full win instead of timed win lost me the game. TK Feasted on the Dying (where were you, Amanda Rogers?) to retrieve two RCs, and attempted with his little five man team three times. I even managed to hold him off to the last attempt, putting 1 and 0 under, but the last one I drew crap on both draws (Unexpected) and he solved.
Lost, 70-100. |

Round 3 | | Thomas V | FW (+90) |
TV was attempting the "Before the Queen" acheivement, playing a DQ Borg deck with lots of small drones and Locutus. Unfortunately for him, I managed to draw into both of my Coolant Leaks on his two early big attempts, one of them followed by a WNOHGB, giving me time to set up. I solved my first space mission quickly thanks to a horrible draw by TV, then headed over to work on my other space mission. I split my team into 7 and 4, attempting with 7. TV wagered on knowing my skills, playing He Wasn't Nice for O'Brien, but he was in my team of 4, with Rachel Garrett supplying my Transporters in the first team, letting me solve. Next turn, I started work on Assess Contamination. TV did not forget the text, but rather threw a useless non-skill dilemma in front to trigger the mission text, then hit me with an unfettered Moral Choice, a Stripped Down to move those over, and something else to stop me with only two under. The cube returned and headed out in a bold rush to solve, attempting with 13 and 3 under. I had a decent look at his crew, so I took a change and dropped Back Room Dealings to hit Locutus, and Gomtuu, hoping he didn't have a way to gain more Dip or Telepathy. It worked as planned, yielding 10 points, but stopping everyone with only 1 under. I sent some folks to the Unicomplex on one ship and attempted from the other to set up Deploy the Fleet. This attempt decimated my away team, shorting me on skills but putting quite a few under. Next turn, I was able to draw into another Anthro, Deploy the Fleet to round the corner and solve my mission to finish.
Won, 100-10. |
