Maquis strange bedfellow |
Introduction |
So, at Baron Morath's suggestion, I decided to play maquis for the regional. I built a deck, but it just didn't seem to fit me. I needed something to make it mine, so I decided to shoot for the strange bedfellows achievement. Initially, I just put in the HQ and a few Distant explorations. Then I figured, if I'm playing founder's homeworld, I should play the dominion defiant. This led to me playing Jem'Hadar, since I was playing all strength missions. That led to me including friction and Jem'Hadar entrenchment to the deck. So the deck was a total pile when I was done, but it was my pile and so I figured why not. The deck goes for the lock out with biogenic weapon + strange new worlds + organized terrorist activities to filter law. It ended up not mattering, though, since all of my opponents but 1 were packing a lot of law. |

Round 1 | | John D Cox | FW (0) |
John was playing an under siege DS9 deck. I got off to a bit of a shaky start, but managed to get friction going very early. This was big- the combo of friction and stalling for time is absolutely brutal. I'd initially included it for Donatra, but it worlds just as well on Odo. He went to his space mission and I managed to stall him for two attempts while I found Biogenic weapon. I played it on the mission, stopping him cold. He couldn't find an answer for it, so he had to go attempt his other missions. Meanwhile, Jem'Hadar + Maquis on the defiant powered through Elude Federation Forces quickly. I then tapped the defiant and scooted them over to the next mission. Neither one of us was playing Transport Crash Survivor, so I was able to microteam my other two missions (thank you kassidy yates and Jem'Hadar). The defiant would move 4 dilemmas to the next mission, I'd attempt with 5. He couldn't do anything so I'd walk through it. In the end, the Defiant basically gave me the other two missions without ever facing a dilemma. Ordinarily I guess that would have been a bit slow, but since the maquis ships can really only move to one mission at a time, it didn't really matter. My dilemma pile sucked it up, though, and I let him walk through two missions. |

Round 2 | | Nathan Miracle | FW (0) |
Nathan was playing a Terok Nor/Ruling council deck. This matchup was incredibly fun. I got set up with the maquis very quickly and was able to cascade virus the critical people as they came out. He went off to attempt kressari rendezvous early and got hit with the unfortunate combo of dreamer and gomtuu. Early on in the game, he lost two of his dukats- his only event destruction. I managed to power through Elude Feds again, but didn't get the bonus points as he managed to stop 3 of my 7 maquis. Fortunately, I had 2 Distant explorations out. On the very next turn, I stalling for timed the dukat on the table (who had killed one biogenic weapon already), then organized terrorist activities to kill him off. Then I hit his kressari with biogenic weapon. He had no way to solve it after that. Since it was on his only space mission (I think), the game was pretty much wrapped up there and he was playing for a modified win at best. The defiant bounced the dilemmas to the next mission, which i powered through with no trouble. He conceded the game after that as he realized it was only a matter of time before I completed Survey New World. An interesting point- at the end of the game, there were only 7 dilemmas total that had been overcome on both sides. I had 4 under his missions and he had 3 under mine. |

Round 3 | | Greg Hodgin | FL (0)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Greg's playing capture- I hate capture. He gets off to a quick start but I get out 3 maquis from my hand early on and I'd opening handed two cascade viruses, which was big early game. Still, it's only a matter of time before he pulls off evek. He only captures Shankaar though, thankfully. Next turn, he kills off evek with High Command Motivation and drops another evek (Evek should really be a Once Per Game thing, imo), this time capturing Ezri. I'm drawing as quickly as I can, trying to find a biogenic weapon. I realize the only shot I have at winning this is to lock him out with the events. Unfortunately, I draw 4, find Amaros who ditches the Valjean for Biogenic weapon. But I've burnt 6 counters and can't play it. He moves off to kressari. I play Issue of Trust and Where No One Has Gone Before. He responds with Central Command (I never found my interrupt prevention) and walks through WNOHGB. He then flies over to his next mission and pulls a repeat performance. I've solved 1 mission for 40 points. He just has to sit on his heels for 2 turns to win via labor camp, but he draws into prison compound and that's GG. |
It seemed like this was the place where the tournament would be decided; I was a bit nervous I must admit. Nick was playing a Maquis and Dominion deck; I'd never seen something like that, so I didn't know what to expect. He played Cascade Virus a couple of times and made me hurt (I needed 6 people to make Evek work). However, this game I learned the power of Central Command: I was able to do two missions in one turn, and he was unable to get his Biogenic Weapon out to stop me from trying that mission. Nick got one mission, but I was able to yank enough captives to make Prison Compound work, and I won this game 100-40. |

Round 4 | | Scott Baughman | FW (0)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Scott and Nathan are the two guys that got me interested in trek and taught me the game. It was really awesome being able to play them in the tournament. He's playing his equinox deck. I get out 3 maquis very quickly and biogenic weapon his Inversion Mystery. He didn't realize it could play on space missions. I manage to catch him with Dreamer twice, getting rid of most of his nucleogenic cards. Cascade virus hits angelo to stop him from getting them back. He powers through a planet mission with some bad dilemma plays from me. I manage to stall him at his second planet mission, though, long enough for me to play strange new worlds on it. I follow it up with Organized Terrorist to filter out the last of his nucleogenic cards. He has no law in his deck. We look at the clock and see that there's 35 minutes left for me to complete two missions. He can't possibly win, so he concedes the match. |
Nick is one more of my proteges - wow this was the day I faced three former students - as I taught him how to play 2E at DragonCon 2010. He did a GREAT job with this deck, eventually locking me completely out of the game like Greg did in round 1 - but with more aplomb. Nick used Biogenic Weapon and later Strange New Worlds to make it where I had no hope of scoring enough points to win the game. Eventually, I conceded and we played a pick-up game which I also lost, LOL! The only advice I have for my former student is build a slightly better dilemma pile. Those dilemmas were no problem it was the events that I couldn't handle. And Nick got the opportunity to give me the Darth Vader speech from Episode IV: "When I left you I was but the learner, now I am the master!" |
