Justified Alpha Borg 1.4 |
Introduction |
After a grueling online league season, it all came down to this, the 1E OTF final. I decided to play my Borg deck since I have been playing it a lot lately and I just want to get good with it. As I play it, I realize that there are a lot of contingency plans built in that I didn't even realize were there when I first started with it, so I hope that those would come in handy for this tournament. |
|
Round 1 | | Niall Matthew | FL (-40) |
My first time being sexectuted and Niall breaks out Terran Empire. I thought it was really interesting that he wasn't using any wormholes and just went with MTD's to get to the Alpha Quadrant. I ended up just getting beat in speed. Nothing you can really do about that. |

Round 2 | | bunz | FW (+45) |
As usual, it is always fun to play with bunz. He was playing a Fed/Starfleet deck keying off of Earth and Visit Cochrane Memorial. I think the fact that the deck takes a lot of time to set up was what gave me the time I needed to staff my cube well and get my objectives done. With a little tinkering though, that deck may be something to look out for. |

Round 3 | | Brian Sykes | FL (-65)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Bad random selections and (very statisically improbable) bad probes spelled out a very diffcult game for me. It also didn't help that Brian was walking through some of my dilemma combos. I just didn't have a chance. |
Michael was playing Borg, which I figured out during the mission phase when he intentionally seeded Earth in the middle of my missions instead of with his group on the far end of the spaceline. I adjust my dilemma seeds accordingly, moving Dead End and Friendly Fire to the front end of my combos to make them more Borg-relevant. We start playing and I get my typical first turn setup, scan VLJ, and see a Ferengi Ingenuity, so I know what to expect there and start drawing for Computer Skill. Meanwhile, Michael is playing Activate Subcommands and quickly amassing a lot of really good Borg on his cube at the far end of the spaceline. As soon as I am able to get 2 Computer Skill people into play I charge into VLJ, getting them stopped and having another person die to Dejaren. That's ok, the clock is ticking down on FI, and I'm able to start building up at Cardassia for HQ: Secure Homeworld. Michael decides that he's finally built up enough and flies to FGC-47 Research and starts scouting with Establish Gateway. I didn't put one of my better combos there and he's able to clear the dilemmas and probe all in one turn thanks to Gowron and Service the Collective. On my turn, while still waiting for FI to tick off, I attempt Cardassia and start clearing dilemmas, but get stopped. On Michael's turn he plays Resistance is Futile on his completed Establish Gateway and flies back toward the end of the spaceline with the intention of assimilating a planet. Unfortunately for him he hits my 'Quark's Jail' combo, and 4 Borg, including Gowron get sent to the Bar, followed by a stop by Chula: The Door. |

Round 4 | | John Paul Veasey | FW (+41) |
Almost the exact opposite of the last game, John was having trouble with my dilemmas and I was hitting every probe (even without the Data Node peeking). I was speeding through scouting/probing and took the win. It ended up being a little bittersweet though since this ended up being a good scouting oppurtunity for John as I ended up playing this deck in the IL Regional as well. |

Round 5 | | Justin Ford | FW (+1) |
Two mission win decks tend to freak me out so I decided almost as soon as Justin dropped Talax on the table that I would try to assimilate it. I have never really played this deck in that offensive manner, but at the time, I thought that I needed to in order to win. It worked but not without a lot of work. This was definitely the most challenging win that I have ever had with this deck and a very good learning experience. |

Closing Thoughts |
I really can't ask for more when I have my best performance with this deck in a league final. 3-2 is a very good finish in my mind and I didn't make any of the infuriating player errors that I have been plagued with as of late. A great experience all around. |
