A Very Traditional Klingon Deck |
Introduction |
League season has come to Chicago. As we have in the past, our league tournaments have a rotating format and we started this season out with Traditional. Personally, I am not a big fan of the format because I never played in tournaments in the Decipher era and I am not familiar with the meta of Traditional. My deck choice came down to the night before the actual tournament between TOS solver and Klingon Riker Sword. I ended up going with Klingons since I have never really played them and I wanted to learn. I put together the best attrition pile that I could and went with that. |

Round 1 | | Maggie Geppert | FW (+100) |
When Maggie put down Qo'nos, I assumed this would be a mirror match. After some time, I realized that she was chasing the Klingon Treachery achievement. My dilemmas were able to slow her down which thankfully made up for the severe lack of Security that I was having. I had to attempt Instruct Advanced Drone first and I was able to build up Security while attempting that mission to finish up the game. |

Round 2 | | Edward Pigman | FW (+35) |
Ed was playing Starfleet. I assume he was either having trouble drawing into a ship or at least into the ship that he wanted. I on the other hand was drawing all the skills I needed early as well as the dilemma combos that I needed to either shut down his mission attempts and leave his Enterprise without enough species to pump up the attributes. Riker and company were able to complete both of the 30 point missions quickly and then microteam Brute Force with the Sword for the win. |

Round 3 | | Al Schaefer | FW (+100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Al was playing Romulan dissidents, and I admit that after a couple turns, I forgot that he even put Cardassia Prime out on the table. Al had a very slow start getting his people out and my deck was not cooperating with his Tal or P&P. I got a very lucky break with Unbelieveable Emergency stopping two and killing two at one point. Again, I was able to get my skills out early and do a lot of microteaming to get the win. |
Michael is playing probably the best deck possible in the format; Klingon Riker Sword. I had my worst start in this game; drawing all dissidents, not getting the scoring events going, and not finding Kira (crutch) early enough. Even an early Tal didn't help much. I ended up having to spend whatever points I had on Endangered just to stall him at his missions and it just wasn't enough. |

Closing Thoughts |
Klingon Sword really is a force to be reckoned with in Traditional format. A solid skill matrix, low cost, and great attributes makes for a powerful deck. Now it is time for me to get to work on a virtual deck for next month. |
