John Corbett Watched Me Pee |
Introduction |
"Ben And John's Bogus Journey"
The good news is, there's a real game store in Richmond now, and Neil actually can run a pretty awesome tournament. The bad news is, the night before the tournament, John Corbett looked into my soul and told me disturbing truths about my life and my worth as a human being, which scrambled my brains. And then he watched me pee in a gas station mens room on the way to the tournament, which is how you put the Corbett Curse on someone. Bottom line is, I went home last night and had nightmares about George Primmin, Cadets, and John Corbett. Other bottom line is, if you make even minor changes to a Regionals-winning deck, you run the risk of it blowing up in your face. |

Round 1 | | John Corbett | FW (0) |
This actually got me off to a good start. We'd played basically the same decks against each other at the Regional in Delaware 2 weeks ago, so we both knew what to expect. He got his first mission done against me pretty easily, but then he moved on to his second mission and got hit by a Dreamer, which caused him to lose 2x Jaresh-Inyo. That set him back long enough for Navaar and Donatra to work their magic. The clutch move that really helped me out was to use Navaar to give Treachery to Chagrith while I was facing Sylvia. That meant that even though I failed to meet Sylvia's requirements, all my personnel had Treachery, so Neral could prevent Sylvia from randomly selecting anyone. (Neral helped me out in all kinds of situations like this all day.) |

Round 2 | | George Meadows | FL (0) |
George's deck used Founder's Homeworld to play the Dominion Defiant, so his planet mission would be even more incredibly easy for his Terok Nor crew. I knew that was going to happen, so my only chance was to delay him in space. I slowed everything down quite a bit by playing Deal With The Count Man on his Engineer so he couldn't staff the Defiant, but it wasn't enough. He solved his space mission when Unfair Comparison let me down. I also couldn't get my Romulan shadiness working smoothly enough to get rid off all his Ruling Councils, so he was able to play one for the 10 points he needed to win with two missions as planned. |

Round 3 | | Charles Barhite | FL (0) |
Charles was playing a crazy deck that did Demonstrate Aggressive Intent and Changeling Research with Legal Proceedings and Distant Exploration to win with 2 missions. It was kind of a hit-or-miss deck because his only ship was the Sao Paolo, which is kind of hard to staff, but he didn't have any problems getting out the gold stars in our game. I was able to get rid of George Primmin with a Secret Identity, and I slowed him down considerably by playing Deal With The Count Man on Carol Marcus, but in the end it wasn't enough, as I got all my Exobiology killed by Whisper In The Dark and couldn't recover in time. |

Round 4 | | FettForever | FW (0) |
Starfleet has a guy who's kind of like George Primmin but not as good. But he still was able to screw everything up Primmin-style and blow him through his space mission and avoid Where No One Has Gone Before. This was really close but in the end I was able to beat him in the race through the third mission. The really key play was when I played an early Brainwashed and stole Jeremy Lucas. That guy helped me out all game. |

Round 5 | | Phil Schrader | FL (0) |
Phil was playing a version of John's deck (itself a version of Charlie Plaine's deck) that did Assess Contamination. My dilemma pile had a lot of skill dilemmas, but it wasn't good enough to deal with Assess Contamination. Actually, that's not quite true, I was holding him off and would almost certainly have won on the next turn if I'd been smart enough to name George Primmin with my second Deal With The Count Man, even though he wasn't in play yet. On the last turn of the game, Primmin finally showed up and he can (and did) really screw up a dilemma combo. |

Round 6 | | Leslie Beam | FL (0) |
Leslie had a really good deck full of Cadets and guys with 7 or 8 cunning and Davies and stuff. She was just always able to come up with double teams for her planet missions, and those are hard to stop when I don't know which team Original Thinker Kirk is going to be in. I just didn't have enough Timescapes to deal with her deck. |
