This is the Regional??? |
Introduction |
I have been waiting for the Regional since last year.....unfortunately i forgot this was the Regional. I had been playtesting several decks in preparation for what Tyler and John might play and I was almost ready. But being a high school Coach at the end of the school year I have been swamped! I remembered there was a Regional soon, but thought that this was a "warm-up" to the event. So I brought my past Klingon solver, a deck I have played a billion times over the past few years, in trying to see how John played. I know Tyler's ridiculous crap, so I wasn't worried about him, I wanted to see how the Jersey guy played. |

Round 1 | | Gerhard Hallgren | FW (+65) |
Here was an unfortunate match up from the beginning. We playtest all the time, so I knew what he was doing and I him. He had been trying to make the Relativity deck work for him and he really likes it. I knew when to prevent TT from being played and it slowed him down a little, as well as knowing who to get rid of for his mission completions. My dilemma pile is very good at getting stops, and it came through. |

Round 2 | | John Corbett | FW (+25)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Like I mentioned before this is the game I really wanted to play. I had no idea what he would bring, but I really wanted to play him to see his style. I knew from our sealed tournaments he talked like he knew what was going on and he showed that he did. I didn't know until afterwards that he was ranked so high in the world, and I see that he has earned that. We both played Klingon solvers, his more a little unorthodox though. His dilemma pile was a killer, but I have plenty of the little brown beasts running around, so I was good. He plays a little like Tyler though. They both like to have small dilemma piles (or decks) and I think that can haunt you. I noticed I had taken quiet a bit of his and he was down to only 6 dilemmas left, so I attempted a planet mission making him stick all there (knowing he would stop me) and then my dilemmas stopped him on his next attempt and I won the next turn. John is a very good player and I am sure he will get the best of me next time, because of my bluffs and misdirections that I think he caught on to, but too late. Good game. |
Jim went first and way always a turn ahead. He went planet first. I drew 9, no NE. Then I used Voluntary Withdraw, drew 7 more, no NE. My 2nd draw was even worse and I didn't do enough damage to Jim to slow his speed deck down. His last planet mission, Rescue Prisoners, I played Temporal Misalignment and exhausted my pile to kill all his transporters. I could only manage one solved mission on my next turn (I had the Vorn out and not enough treachery klingons to boost it's range). Jim was able to solve his 4th mission clean since I had no dilemmas in my pile. |

Round 3 | | Tyler Fultz | FL (-90)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
I am going to take this time and let anyone who reads this know that Tyler is going to be a great father. He has all the tools that he will need to care for, love, and nourish a child. Tyler will be able to give his son/daughter so much in terms of support, knowledge and attention. I am happy for him and his lovely wife, Katie. I wish them the best and can't wait to see the new addition to the family! |
Jim was playing standard past Klingons and Kruge was a fear from the beginning. Luckily for me, he had trouble finding a ship and I was able to grab Kruge with Holding Cell. My deck played quickly and I had no trouble blowing through his stopper dilemmas for a 100-0 win. He never attempted a mission. |
|
Round 4 | | Lance Stonecipher | FW (+65) |
This was Lance's first constructed tournament and he has shown a ton of improvement! If he sticks with this game, I do not see him placing last in many tournaments but at the top. He played a Starfleet battle deck, so I knew to be careful. Unfortunately, I was able to get 2 Gomtuu's on his ship and had Point Blank Stare in my hand. I didn't blow his ship up, and quickly completed the needed missions to win. I am happy at the end that he wasn't discouraged but enthused about the next time we would play.

Closing Thoughts |
The tournament was fun. I was reminded it was the Regional after losing to Tyler, but saw that I had a chance of still winning because I was his only victory (the other wins he had were modified) and if he lost to John than I would win the whole thing. Kinda funny because I know Tyler would love to win one of these things. But seeing John, Johnathon and Lance was cool and I look forward to playing again. |
