Tournament Report - 1E - North American Continentals Day One

FederationThe Tapestry of Time
Introduction
Since starting to play again last year around the same time, I have wanted to go to GenCon. I looked at all the reports and all the pictures - anything I could get a hold of I read. Knowing of a place where there were more than a couple of STCCG players was an awesome thought to me and I had to go. Leading up to this tournament I played in the Sector 001 Regional where I played a very similar deck with TTP. It was very successful and it was probably the deck that I had the most fun playing that I had ever built. I was very confident in this deck so I decided to play a modified version of the deck again about a month before at a tournament hosted in Jacksonville, NC. I wanted to see if it would hold up under a different meta group. It did well and even won the tournament. My main focus in this tournament was to see how my dilemmas might due against TNG. A TNG Federation deck that I played against was very good against it but I still believed that I could do very well at GenCon. I knew there were some fragile elements to the success of the deck but I wanted to play it nonetheless.

Round 1Earned ByeEB (0)
Earned Bye - Sector 001 Regional Champion 2012

Round 2FederationWilliam JolleyFW (+100)
I started out against William with a great STP drop at my outpost I picked up my DF Security Personnel and my Mission Specialist and continued on to Commandeer Empok Nor for the Equipment Download. I was successful and gathered up gear and headed out. I quickly solved a mission plowing through the dilemmas for a 50 point solve on Insurrection. I moved back over to Empok Nor and docked waiting to DL the USS Enterprise A to grab Commander Chekov on the next turn. William reported a couple of people and ended turn. I traveled to another Planet Mission completed it for 40 points and headed back to the Space Mission in the Briar Patch. I wasn't worried about "In the Zone" because with the mission solve I would win the game. I attempted and was stopped with the last dilemma being discarded it cleared the way for Commander Chekov to undock with Empok Nor for the Solve. FW 100-0 One note in this game was the fact that William used Containment Field which was something that I never played against that card before and it caused me a little bit of hassle but luckily did not slow progress. The game was over in 4 Turns.

Round 3FerengiChris CastagnettoFL (-65)
During the seed phase I realized that Chris was playing TNG Ferengi. Going into Continentals I was worried about 2 types of decks. TNG Klingon and TNG Ferengi. The Ferengi worried me because of their ability to send 6 Ferengi to Empok Nor to stop my commandeering attempt and really stump the strengths of my deck. When I attempted Empok Nor Chris downloaded his 6 Ferengi but to my surprise he downloaded them to the Promenade Shops which did not stop my commandeering attempt so I was able to download all my equipment to the different sites. On the next turn I went to grab the equipment at each of the sites but one his turn the Ferengi followed and killed a few of my personnel. My card play that turn was used to DL Admiral Riker and the Future Enterprise because the STP drop was done with the Starship Enterprise from TwT. I knew I had to get off that station or all my personnel were going to die and his Ferengi Military Ops would obliterate my Starship Enterprise. I evacuated onto my 2 ships and headed out away from Empok Nor and attempted a mission with what looking back was an away team way to small. His dilemmas killed 2 personnel and another on my next turn. I slowly began reporting people and attempting and eventually solved a mission but his Ferengi were plowing through my Chula: The Game combo. He encountered a Vidiian Scout Vessel which he was able damage and score points from due to FMO. Along with those points and points from the 62nd RoA he was able to do 2 missions for the FW. Wow ! Chris' deck was a Ferengi Machine.

Round 4BajoranMichael Van BreemenFW (+59)View opponent's Report
Michael was playing a very quick Bajoran Resistance and Bajoran Headquarters deck that played a ton of very good cards every turn. I quickly commandeered Empok Nor and downloaded my equipment and sites. The next turn I headed out to do missions. I struggled slightly with his combos because he had 24 Dilemmas seeded. Yikes ! By the end of the game, Michael had almost all of of his personnel in play. He was hard stopped by most of my combos. That being said they delayed him just long enough for me to complete the massive combos. At the end of the game, Michael realized he could have blocked my STP drop and probably won the game. I was very lucky he did not realize that when I played the Future Enterprise on turn one with 6 crew members.

Closing Thoughts
I was worried that I had not had a hard enough strength of schedule advance to the final 4. However, playing Chris and Michael gave me the SoS I needed to advance but I knew I would have to play Chris again and I just hoped it would not be in the first round. However, when bracketing was posted my first game would be against the 2011 and Current World Champion Jeremy Commandeur.
