The Epic Rescue of Li Nalas |
Introduction |
I was excited to play for the first time in a year. I've been working on a Borg deck, but since I saw a new player had been pre-reged for such a small tournament, I wanted to play something more conventional. So I threw together an attempt to combine The Earring of Li Nalas + The Genesis Device to earn 100 points from Rescue Prisoners, since it might not be legal for long. (Though the other players at the tourney doubted it was legal in the first place.)
Ultimately my downfall was inexperience with Bajorans, and a distinct lack of SECURITY. |

Round 1 | | Barry Windschitl | FL (-2)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Barry was TNG borg + Androids. I went first, and my regions were adjacent, so we kept to our own halves. DS9 was at Relocate Settlers. I take three turns to work through a LoveScow/Talosian/Matriarchal combo at Jeraddo. Barry has Mission Debriefing, so I download my artifacts to a separate crew, who immediately place The Genesis Device on Rescue Prisoners. There I overcome Something/DNA Clues, but am stonewalled by Scientific Method.
Meanwhile Barry is going back and forth between Foster New Collective, Investigate Raid, and Amnesty Talks, running into Medical Crisis, Scientific Method, and Navigational Hazards/Emergency Conversion respectively. Also amusing is how I correctly (and ironically) seeded Outpost Raid at Foster New Collective. He's poised to solve his last two missions, so I begin my last turn desperate to draw into Laas as my third SCIENCE. Renewal Scroll, Deputy Quark & Renewal Scroll get me Laas, though downloading Dr. Telek R'Mor would have worked, too.
I solve, and point out my artifact combo, but Barry and Kris were not convinced that the end result is a 100-point solve. Kris said that he'd rather err on the side of preventing those kinds of schenanigans. I respected that and didn't want to argue, since the win was not as important as the proof of concept. |
This one came down to a ruling by Kris on his combining both Genesis Device and Earring of Li Nalas on Rescue Prisoners. There's still a question awaiting the word of The Pfti, but it seemed like the timing of it would be an issue. He did something that was interesting for at least one mission: Just put in a bunch of walls that I had to "adapt" to (Not Borg adapt, but get the skills out, and or bring in some more 'Droids).

Round 2 | | Robert Petersen | ML (-15)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Robert was Dominion with two GQ missions, so I kept DS9 at Bajor. I went first again. First attempts were are Cardassia Prime and Bajor, but I lost a few handfuls of personnel at both due to doubled Barclay's Protomorphosis. Robert had no Invasive Beam-In, so I was mostly safe from battle except while stopped on Cardassia Prime. Here I erred by using Bareil's download for a phaser instead of a Transport Inhibitor, because I forgot Robert had a second rifle. Not a disaster, but my two casualties and his +10 points did not help my cause. Then Remember the Alamo killed another SECURITY.
Robert solved a space mission, but got stuck at another space (Nav Hazards or E Conversion?) and at Betazed (Med Crisis). The fact that I had lost all my SECURITY except an Odo I couldn't download made me unable to solve any missions. When time ran out I only had 30 Dabo points to my name. |
Playing Jason is always fun because you never know what to expect and this game definetly did not disappoint. Placing the Bajoran Wormhole in between his Bajoran and Cardassian regions I was ready to police the spaceline. Going about my way I managed to solve Abduction plot and was feeling good until I realized something pretty terrifying. Every turn Jason was playing Dabo and racking up the points. The only saving grace was that I effectively locked him out of his missions due to killing all of the Security personnel in his deck. Finding myself locked out of Navigation personnel myself in the AQ, when time came the only thing I could think was...what a wierd game. |

Round 3 | | Kris Sonsteby | FL (-100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
First time playing Kris in Constructed, and he brought Legitimate Klingons. He went first, and our spaceline was Barzan, Cardassia, Reported Activity, Bajor, the rest of Kris's stuff. Kris put Homefront on Bajor, which really threw a wrench into my plans. Now there was too much competition for my card play: Renewal Scroll, SECURITY to counteract Homefront, and ships.
Kris worked through Distress Mission, where I hit with Outpost Raid yet again, but Riker's ETU saved Gowron. Lore easily passed my Clown combo. Meanwhile I'm just staying safe at Bajor, trying to build up my SECURITY. I finally came up with a plan to steal Wormhole Negotiations with Kira, Kira Taban, Odo, and Dr. Telek R'Mor (who could pass my Nav Hazards/Emergency Conversion combo there), but I was en route when my Friendly Fire expired and Kris solved Seize Freighter. Arbiter of Succession sealed my fate.
My head was just not in this game. I forgot about BRC draws for several turns. One turn I should have card-played a ship, DH Odo, then retrieve Deputy Quark from DS9 to get my 4 SECURITY to counter Homefront. Instead I downloaded Odo with Homefront itself, costing my card play, download, and card draws all at once, and leaving me short of 4 SEC on my following turn. |
JTG was kicking it with Bajoran, and went all in on stealing Wormhole Negotiations despite its vast distance from his homeworld. Plowing through Distress Mission after just a few turns, Konmel & Co. eventually cleared Seize Freighter before he could swipe what would have been a free 45 pointer. FW 100-0. |

Closing Thoughts |
I played a deck that was different from my usual, but did not adjust my play style, so I paid the price. The abundant Dabo points meant that I didn't need to be cautious about Lack of Prep, so I should have been more protective of my solving personnel (vs. Robert) and less protective of my non-solving personnel (vs. Kris).
But I got to play again, and I got some experience with Bajorans, so it was all good. The deck itself might have potential with further tuning, and may be worth playing even if Earring and Genesis can't be stacked. It would be nice to get this clarified; after a week of discussion on the forum, there's been no ruling or clear agreement. |
