I Bent My Kobayashi! |
Introduction |
So I wanted to try out some Kobayashi Maru Scenario combos to see if it's worth investing the time when building OTF decks. Ehhh...not really. |

Round 1 | | Michael Van Breemen | FL (-5)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
MVB always seems to get the best of me haha. I had 95 pts pretty much out the gate, but I couldn't get the last five and I made a dumb mistake of forgetting about his LORE on the table and figured Crystalline Entity was somewhere out there. My second to last turn I started clearing a third mission and put Taitt and Guinan on a sacrifice ship. I could have kept either one on the Enterprise and won as I would have solved next turn with the Stellar Cartography or I could have Guinan + Captain's Log + Enterprise/Jean-Luc to go attempt the other space mission with another Crystalline Entity that would have netted me the 5 remaining pts. |
Derrick was playing TNG Feds with 6 Kobayashi Maru's on my missions. He also was playing multiple Access Denied's for free. That, I figured, would be a problem since they didn't have all that much Computer Skill in the deck. I go out attempting first, making past all but Medical Crisis at Revenge Plot. Second time I go, he manages to pick my nurse out of a random selection of 12 or so people, failing the mission again. Eventually I solve the mission but by this time he's at 95 points and I'm at 50 so I figured might as well, try to clear out Compromised Mission and get stopped but I ended up solving due to the sheer number of people I have in play at this point (almost 20) which was bad since In the Zone was in play. My only hope is, on my next turn, get to Amnesty Talks and hope none of my MS personnel get stopped. He gets everyone killed to my Lore-enhanced Crystalline Entity from the first crew, clears out the Shaka on the second crew but unfortunately lost his only Stellar Cartography to the first crew, leaving the mission dilemma free but unsolved. This gave me the opening I needed and mass solved past his enhanced Ancient Computers with my sheer numbers for the win by the skin of my teeth. |

Kobayashi Maru's and Dead Ending his Insurrection made it difficult on Paz. Took me a few turns, but I solved the missions for FW. |
Second game was much faster to setup. Again I hit 6 Maru Scenarios, but most pain was double seeded Insurrection. After all I think I could have get some points without my unlucky draws and less lucky opponent's draws. |

Round 3 | | Matthew Zinno | FW (+50)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Matt was playing an interesting DQ Fed TNG deck. We had some fun, but I eventually got him due to the large amounts of skills needed to pass my dilemma combos. |
Captain's Log: Everywhere we go, we are hearing distress signals that prove to be traps in disguise.
Derrick put Kobayashi on every one of my missions. So I let loose my tribbles. He made short work of his first mission, partly because I had rearranged my combos to put more at Insurrection, to guard against a CMP that never came. On my first attempt, I passed LOP (even with the 2CS added by KMS and Access Denied), then failed Ankari (cured next turn). Then I got my Implants out, and found Ancient Computer next there. I prepared for it, but was not prepared for Derrick to Flip SOG-D to boost it ... which got another person put under the KMS without passing the dilemma. I left that alone until I was more ready, and peeked at a few more places, finding Med-Crisis, Sci-Met, and DeadEnd. I drew into my Kevin Convergence, and waited until all his people were together so I could hit his Ocular Implants and FF:Renewed at once. He tried a space mission, and cleared it by finding Borg Ship and Cytherians, flying toward each other. He considered an STP-up, but we found that the Borg flew safely past rather quickly now that they have a range of 8. He got his Cytherians points, bringing him to 55. I finally got enough SCIENCE in play to pass the boosted Ancient Computer and solve Seal Rift, plus the self-seeded Cytherians there, for (cut off by ITZ) 50 points. But Derrick now had enough ships out to daisy-chain from the spaceline end back to the cleared space mission, to solve FTW. (We then tested my full crew against his combos, and I would have easily passed all the ones I had peeked at; I just needed more turns.)

Round 4 | | Kevin Jaeger | FL (-65)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
We both played with six Kobayashi Marus haha. Kevin just nailed me with Invasive Beam-In and I couldn't recover from him just killing all my puny Feds with 5-6 strength against his huge Jem'hadar beefed up bronies. Anyways, I made it difficult on him mission solving. Ended up solving one mission at least, but he had a ton of pts from Victory is Life. Dominion are gonna get a hard beat stick soon I have a feeling with DS9 block out and when they get their cards. |
Derrick was also running the kobyashi but the difference in this game was invasive beam in which allowed my jemmies to old school rape the new tech. Derrick tried to fight his way back in after i returned to the GQ and was stopped by his one in sixteen chance to hit weyoun with KMS into guilotine. I was able to masaka into two more diplomacy and then got passed the guillotine for the win. |

Closing Thoughts |
Kobayashi are nice if you nail someone good, but suck if you don't. And even worse if opponent is packing a CS mission specialist. Too much risk unless you're still able to seed 3 dilemmas underneath and even then it's risky. Better to just play them in your deck and play them that way :) |
