Tournament Report - 2E Infinite Diversity Draft
2012-03-11 - 12:00 PM
Introduction
I'm normally not a fan of drafting or sealed deck events, but they can be a lot of fun. Michael Moskop was gracious enough to do the excessive printing, cutting and sorting for an IDIC draft, and I wasn't going to be able to make this month's constructed event, so I decided to do whatever I could to attend the draft. The strange situation today was that Maggie misread the tournament start time and in order to keep the event on schedule I did back to back drafts; once for myself and once for her. Maggie ended up winning the event, so I guess I did a decent job of drafting for her. By chance, we both had identical HQ's in our mission packs so she benefited from my experience in my own draft. My mission pack was extremely challenging, I only had 2 planet missions; one required Acquisition and the other was Hunt Alien: a span-3 Delta quadrant mission. This was a huge weakness for my deck given the prevalence of The Clown Go Away and that I had Alpha quadrant HQ's. Even worse, I had to miss the Tribbles event afterward due to a sudden stomach issue. Not sure what happened or where it came from but I was in a real bad way the whole trip home. I'm okay now, but there were times where I thought I was going to have to pull over.

Round 1FerengiMike BurkeFL (-35)
Mike got Ferenginar in his mission set and was off to a hot start gaining counters with random equipment based events. I slowly built up my team and attempted a full two turns after Mike. I was able to stall him for quite some time playing all three of my Instigate Dissension's. But Mike was able to get out The Clown and I had to waste time and counters heading back to my HQ for another ship and replacement personnel. By the time Mike finished his first mission he had also built up a second crew and ship and was able to double attempt his second mission and was able to wrap up the win after my last ditch 12-person attempt failed.

Round 2RomulanCorbin JohnsonFL (-70)
I made one mistake in this game and I lost because of it. I got off to a great start and Corbin made a bad dilemma play at my first mission attempt and I had an early lead. But Corbin crept back when Donatra made a late game entrance that neutralized my Instigate Dissension advantage. My mistake was leaving Officer on the wrong ship on a mission attempt and then needing that skill for the mission. That's what happens to me in Sealed Deck/Draft, I don't take it seriously and I make stupid mistakes.

Round 3KlingonEric BiecheFW (+70)
Eric made a huge error in this game, thinking my first mission attempt was at space instead of planet. I'll admit, Hunt Alien does look like a space mission, so I can understand how the mistake was made. Eric also seemed frustrated by his performance so far, and the wheels were coming off. I skated to an easy victory on Eric's dilemma play and Instigate Dissension x3.
