Donatra and... (the kitchen sink) v2.0 |
Introduction |
Continuing a personal goal of getting a tournament win with each affiliation, Romulan was next in my cycle. In danger of going 10 events with Romulans and without a win, I updated my Kitchen Sink deck with Commandeer Prototype and the Phoenix to help get stretch out games long enough to get some wins. |

Round 1 | | Bye | BY (0) |
I played Brian before the event started against his latest Voyager build. I got some points scoring early and often with PnP and GUYS. Brian scored plenty of bonus points as well, but in the end, he didn't have enough answers for Donatra and her team of cheaters. |

Round 2 | | Corbin Johnson | TT (0)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Corbin was playing a tight Prometheus Battle deck. I didn't get nearly as good a start as I did in my pre-game, it took a while to get both PnP and GUYS in play. I dodged an early ship destruction when he couldn't find all the pieces to use Prometheus. But I got greedy and had a ship destroyed anyway. Corbin looked like he was going to run away with the game at that point, but a timely WNOHGB gave me an opportunity to come back and keep it close. I needed every trick the deck could offer to keep Corbin from getting anymore points and earning a MW. |
Al's Kitchen Sink deck is very solid and It's not the first time I'd faced it. I had defeated it once before (but only once before) with a deck that was faster (Relativity). My guys were having a tough time getting around his dilemmas and he had two ships going and was attempting missions very quickly. I made a fatal mistake by wasting a turn attacking his bird-of-prey which I knew I could not blow up as on his next turn he simply played another ship and continued his mission attempt. I did manage to blow up this next ship (Gomtuu + Prometheus) but he recovered fairly quickly and I had simply devoted too many resources to messing with Al that we ended up true tie-ing. The only reason he didn't win was a very lucky racial tension at his assess contamination that ended up knocking out just enough cunning to prevent the solve. His dilemmas shut me down. |

Round 3 | | Justin Eaton | FW (+100) |
Justin is a returning player who had to face me due to a conflict with pairings after Maggie had to leave. His old-school dilemmas and time away from the game were not enough to challenge the high-flying Donatra team. |

Closing Thoughts |
Eric and Corbin timed out their game and I finally backed into a tournament win with Romulans. In the "Achievement Era" I've played Romulans 9 times with a record of 13-12-1. Not exactly shining, but if I'm persistent if anything. I've got two more decks ready for affiliations I haven't won with yet. But now I can break down Romulans and Ferengi and start trying something new! I also won both Tribbles events today. I'm pretty sure that's the first time that anyone has won all three events (The Illinois Triple Crown), but I'll have to do some research to check on that. Either way, it was a really fun day. |
