Relativity 1-31-16 |
Introduction |
First event of 2016 for me. This year didn't get off to a good start, I had bronchitis the first week of the year and had my first sick day from work in more than 9 years. My whole extended family has been battling colds, flu's, fever's, etc since the beginning of the year. We're almost all better now, but with all the sickness and business at work, I just haven't had the time to devote to cards like I normally do this time of year. I made some time Saturday night to revamp a Relativity deck, but I missed 3 cards I wanted to put in. They wouldn't have made much of a difference, but it would have been nice to play with the deck I thought I had made. |

Round 1 | | Eric Bieche | FW (+65) |
Eric was playing old-school alpha borg. I knew what to expect from his draw deck, but I felt out his dilemma pile with an Ohhh Nothing Happened early on and whiffed when I called Hard Time. My next two ONH's hit when I called All Consuming Evil, so I was very surprised when he hit me with Tactical Disadvantage at my first attempt. I was able to slog through my missions and felt I was getting the lead when Eric got off a Dreamer and the Dream and killed my last two Temporal Transporters. This slowed me down and Eric got a mission completed but I was able to finish all mine before he caught up. |

Round 2 | | Jason Beyer | FW (+65) |
Jason was playing all space Voyager with Homeward Bound and Thirst for Knowledge. I'd read a little about this neu-Voyager, but hadn't played it yet. I got off to a similar start as last game and used my ONH's to get rid of Jason's Hard Times. He got a Gomtuu on my ship early and almost got a second if it wasn't for Revised Chakotay. Jason's pumped up Moriks were way annoying, but I was able to snipe out a Physics personnel early and get off a Dreamer which sent him digging for mission skills. That gave me the time to secure the win. |

Round 3 | | Casey Wickum | FL (-65)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Casey is also playing the neu-Voyager but I knew he likely wouldn't have the same issues as Jason. Casey got the new Chakotay out early and the Delta Flyer and RATS and Tom Paris. I wasn't playing TCS, so he was able to double attempt every mission with micro teams that had matching captains, pretty much from turn 4 on. I probably had my best draw of the day and used my ONH's to get rid of his signature Infinite Diversity's, but I still had to grind my way through his "Rapid Progress" x3 before I could solve a mission. On one turn, thanks to Homeward Bound, Casey attempted the same space mission 3 times and I think I drew a total of 8 dilemmas. I fought the good fight, but in the end, Relativity doesn't have enough skill redundancy or cheating to beat a good skill tracker and I had nothing to combat micro-teaming. Homeward Bound, and Steadfast Chakotay are definitely cards that Voyager needed. But I really don't think Voyager needed both of those cards. |
Al brought out Relativity which I have a good deal of confidence and experience facing, I got off to a decent start. Al started picking off my dilemmas one by one with his Temporal Hijinx. Though I was able to cope with some Shocking Betrayals and Moral Choice, the remaining Rapids and ID's I had worked like a charm however and held Al off long enough for me to get my dual ship micro teamers going out. Once I had the Homeward Bound trifecta and 2 ships able to solve my missions with Rats Support I was feeling very confident and was able to fly off to another FW. |

Closing Thoughts |
My dilemma pile today was my latest rendition of the standard attrition pile. I drew Honorable Pursuit a couple times, but never played it - just didn't see a lot of Honor today or didn't track it and wasn't sure if it was worth it. Tried The Oracle's Punishment today and drew it twice but didn't play. Once I couldn't afford it, the other I could, but knew that it wouldn't stop the mission and couldn't afford anything to follow it. Both times I wished it was He Wasn't Nice, instead. Drew Assassination attempt a couple times, but couldn't play it cuz there was so much space only stuff. Had 2 chances to play Where No One has Gone Before against Casey and Jason, but couldn't risk it because of the pumped up attributes on the multiple Moriks. I was satisfied with my dilemma plays, but if the neu-Voyager is going to be more common, I'll have to make some adjustments.
Thanks to Maggie for running the event and setting up a new location at Gaming Goat in Hoffman Estates. It's a little more of a drive, but it's worth the trip to play cards. Not sure what the next 2-4 months will be like for me. My wife is due to have our second child in mid-March and we're planning to sell our condo and move further North into Wisconsin. I've got to get some decks made, and clean up my card area to get the condo ready to sell. Hopefully there are no complications with the new baby and I can play again in late February, March, and beyond. |
