ID Draft - Kli/Rom 06-26-2016 |
Introduction |
Didn't get a chance to really prep for this event. Just did a quick read-through of the updated rules and revisited my TR's from our previous ID Drafts. I thought I drafted pretty well, but I was a little short on Programming and Transporters to do the missions I wanted to. I wasn't any better off with the other missions I had so I went with dual HQ and kept my fingers crossed. |
|
Round 1 | | Michael Moskop | FW (+30) |
Michael made it sound like he had done some test drafts or at least looked at all the cards that would be available in the draft. We were in the same draft pod and he had scooped up all the Ferengi. We both had good starts and stumped each other at our missions. He had drafted Evaluate Soliton Wave and 2 big ships and was able to solve it for 40 points, leaving him to choose from 2 easier 30 point missions. I was able to bounce back and forth between my missions, stacking dilemmas until I finally completed my space mission and attempted my planet on the same turn. Moskop still stopped me, but would need some insane luck to stop me on my next turn. He chose to attempt with everyone at his planet mission and I was able to draw my entire pile and stack 14 counters. I had 4 filter dilemmas with 2 walls just to be safe. I was able to knock out his Jo'Bril so my Dangerous Liasons would stop everyone else. On my next turn, I was able to attempt with a team that only left him one draw and he didn't get anything that he could play and I secured the win. |

Round 2 | | Maggie Geppert | FW (+70) |
Maggie was in the other draft pod and was going all Romulan. She used her 3 counters to download a D'Deridix and played a ton of people, but she didn't have a command star to staff it. I played quickly, throwing personnel down and putting the pressure on. Maggie got off a good dilemma stack that included Pest Control. That attempt had gotten rid of my Morik (Transporters) and the PC got two more Transporters off the top of my deck. I knew Maggie was having a hard time finding something so I kept drawing and playing as many low-cost guys in case I would need the once-per-game reshuffle, but I was able to finish both missions before she got off her HQ. |

Round 3 | | Brian Leonard | FW (+60) |
I got off to a hot start in this game and had a ship in my opening hand so I didn't use my 3 counters this game to do the first turn download. I got an early break when Brian played Dead Weight by itself and only stopped 2 people. Brian was able to stall me at my space mission for a few turns, but never made up the ground by that first dilemma play. |

Closing Thoughts |
The new draft rules definitely take the pressure off of drafting. Knowing that you'll be able to play any personnel you draft makes it important to be familiar with which missions you can draft and what skills are needed. I got very fortunate being able to find the skills I needed in each game. Keeping the deck size small is key to make sure you can get to those skills. I used the ship download in 2 of the 3 games and I used Quantum Slipstream Drive in every game as well. |
