Block Does Not Mean Virtual |
Introduction |
I thought the tournament was block-only but in fact it was virtual... That's what you get for not paying attention to the tournament format. I just sorta grabbed cards and put them together. |
|
Round 1 | | Tosk | FW (+50) |
First game went against Borg. I forgot about Assimilate Planet being able to take out my own planets and learned about Contingency Plan but I was able to get ahead for the win. |

Round 2 | | Mark | FW (+30)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Second game went against Romulans. I captured Picard this game but we both had bad draws. It wasn't until he went to his last dilemma at his last mission with Armus: Skin of Evil taking out his Engineer that I was able to walk through my final mission for the win. |
Round 2 - vs The Ninja Scot:
We had no duplication of missions or Doorways, which was cool. Mr Van Breemen was playing Ferengi. I wondered if it would be battle-y, but with no Battle Bridge I thought it might be OK.
We both ran into problems early with unideal draws.
Mr Scot attempted first. Flim-Flam got me a card, Forsaken lost him two people, and New Essentialists stopped him.
I attempted. Chula The Chandra let only Thei and Tacil continue, the former got caught by a Friendly Fire.
The Ferengi bust through New Essentialists and solved Revenge Plot (=35). Then they attempted at The Last Outpost, and stopped for an Edo Probe.
At this point I got my Surprise Party out. The way it was going, that was needed.
Bok came over and captured Picard at Investigate Raid. (+5 with FMO =40) Then another crew attempted to steal Technology. Forsaken took Mordoc and Koral away, Reluctant Informant stopped Vekor and Baran, and Ankari Spirits started picking off people. One of them was, conveniently, an Engineer...
Friendly Fire expired, and I sent everyone at that mission to attempt. Flim-Flam Artist was easily passable (yay Spock!), no Mission Specialists there for the mission requirements, so solved for 35.
I moved the ship over and attacked the Kurdon that happened to still be at Investigate Raid, regular hit. 2 Attack Wings took out Daimon Bok and Dr Syrus.
Michael solved Steal Technology (+35=75).
With Edo Probe gone, he reattempted The Last Outpost. He squeaked past The Arsenal: Separated, but was stopped by Trilithium Raid.
I'd drawn into my first AMS, but had to not play it as I needed to get over to my other missions. D'Vin, Galathon, Trolarak and an RRD for Defiant Dedication Plaque did the job. I moved the D'Deridex one mission to the Homeworld, beamed a bunch of folk to the Trolarak, then moved the D-bird back and finished off the Kurdon, putting my Picard in my discard pile. The Trolarak went to Investigate Destruction, where my Outpost was, and picked up its Matching Commander, and attempted. I easily got through the combo there: Distracted By Thoughts Of Maglock, Gomtuu Shock Wave, Armus Energy Field. The last took out Proconsul Neral and Tomalak. A Treachery Mission Specialist made the mission worth 35 points to me (+35=70).
The Ninja Scot had no Ref cards on the table, so I thought (especially as this was likely to be my last turn anyway) that I would throw everyone I could at the next mission I could reach: Covert Installation.
Forsaken was first, and I pitched 2 Treachery (almost pitching 2 Honor, but changing my mind just in case of "God". A Good Day To Lie was next, and D'Lors and Spock got through that one. Armus Skin Of Evil was next, killing D'Lors and Tacil (my only Engineer there). Thus, I couldn't complete the mission. With the AMS in hand, I could have got what I needed next turn.
Alas, Mr Van Breemen gathered enough people to way easily pass Trilithium Raid and solve The Last Outpost (+35=110). Good game.
Final score: The Ninja Scot got 110, I got 70. |

Round 3 | | Danny Nuttall | FL (-55)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Played against Danny who was playing a Klingon deck with all planets. With his swarm of people and ships there was little that I could do. Unfortunately I misseeded my space dilemmas underneath the two missions that we shared and I had forgotten how misseeds work. He won fairly easily after that. |
Another round, another world champion! And another round where I'd been drawn to go second when Merc Raider battles are so damn important!
In truth, this round was easier than I expected as MVB had accidentally mis-read 'Virtual' to mean 'Block' and thus his deck missed out on a whole bunch of key cards which up the power curve of this format from block considerably. Great kudos to MVB for losing only 1 round in the whole tournament though with a block deck! Well done mate!
I managed to disrupt MVB early on with some battle, particularly over the Merc Raiders which I managed to staff first (got lucky), and was fortunate enough that Barclay's wiped out a large crew at one of MVB's early mission attempts.
From here on, I was able to bide my time and plough through dilemmas at a reasonable rate until I hit the magic 140 from 3 planets. Not before MVB had recovered enough, mind, to gather a motley bunch together and compete Steal Technology for 40.
FW: 140-45 |

Round 4 | | Daniel Matteson | FW (+40) |
I played against Borg again and was able to outspeed him thanks to him not getting a counterpart to couple with his Service the Collective. His dilemmas were doing his job and mine weren't nearly as successful. The best was his failed probe of Surprise Party, one of the two bad seed cards in his draw deck. |

Closing Thoughts |
Despite not realizing that there's a huge difference between Block and Virtual I did surprisingly well. |
