I did not playtest this. |
Introduction |
I played this Romulan virtual deck last weekend when I borrowed it from Steve. Prior to that weekend, I had never played Romulans, so I figured it'd be fun to try it blind.
I didn't have time to throw a deck together this week either, so I borrowed it again. Now that I had an idea of how it worked, I wanted to see if I could do better. |

Round 1 | | Lucas Thompson | ML (-5)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Lucas was playing an achievement deck full of Vulcans and a Tragic Turn kill pile. I was able to get a crew together and start attempting, letting my weenies get killed to his dilemma pile. My first two missions were flooded with dilemmas, allowing me to solve each on the second attempt.
Lucas was hitting some walls with the species-specific dilemmas and his all Vulcan team. He decked out early, and I knew he was in a tight only having 1 mission to my planet and space. I considered that I could deck myself out in one turn using the AWC I had in hand, but I wasn't sure how it would count for win. So I tried for the last mission I needed, and got my team killed and ship destaffed. Time was called on his turn and he solved another mission for the Modified Win.
Lessons learned, I'll just deck out for the win when I can. |
Romulans have a lot of answers for stops, and few answers for kills. I'd heard from last time too that this particular deck has staffing issues, which is useful information when you're running a Tragic Turn pile. However, Chris went planet first and kept his staffing aboard the ship and avoided my Necessary Execution. In each of my games with this deck, there is usually one mission where the dilemma pile totally fails. This time it was for Chris' space mission, which would have been a big break for me to destaff him there. I did finally kill all his command stars at his final planet, but by then time was out and I pulled ahead on my final turn. |

Round 2 | | Dogbert | FW (+100) |
Dogbert used to play 2E with us back in the Decipher days. Now that he's back in Boston, he borrowed a TNG-AU deck (made by Lucas) to start off.
His deck was a bit slow, but he was also figuring out how to make it work. He had the key parts out, but my dilemma pile was able to hold him at his first mission. I was able to have my crew solve three quickly and get the win. |

Round 3 | | Chris Morse | FW (+100) |
Chris had beaten Steve and Lucas with his deck already, so I was wary of how he'd do against me. He was playing DS9/Earth with Cadets, so I was expecting his deck to be fast and drop a lot of personnel.
I started off my team pretty strong, but he was dropping DS9'ers and Cadets left and right. He played a Promenade School, and I was able use it with the Viceroy, and then cancel it with GPT. A few GUYS hit and allowed me to catch up with dropping personnel of my own. I headed for my missions and was able to get through them eventually.
Chris was still waiting to get a ship, as he has close to 20 personnel at Earth, just waiting. Finally he drew an Excelsior and hit Practice Orbital Maneuvers. A Captain's Guest, Secret Identity and Gomtuu combo ended his chance, and I was able to solve my last mission the next turn. |

Closing Thoughts |
Now that I know how to play this Romulan deck, I feel better about my chances with it. I think we'll see more variations of this deck, as we don't usually have Romulan in the meta, and everyone got a taste of it. |
