Tournament Report - 1E Open - Worlds Side Event
2011-08-07 - 10:00 AM
Non-AlignedFederationWait... this is a 1E Tournament?
Introduction
Arguably, this was the most fun I've had in a tournament playing Trek in a very long time. That's not to say playing trek isn't awesome every time I play, but Cool tournaments are an extra special piece of cake with the most delicious frosting blah blah blah you get it. I'm not sure if the north Risans started the Cool Tournament tradition, but I do remember some cool tournaments in the past happening at Scenario Game and Hobby in Fremont, CA that were also a blast. The two cool decks I can think of playing in the past included a deck that would play 800+ personnel to the space line using a reversed anti-time anomaly (which I pulled off once... but since the deck was 800 cards no one else thought it was that cool) as well as a deck that cloned mission specialists. It worked... but it wasn't that cool. My deck (posted here: http://www.trekcc.org/1e/decklists/index.php?mode=viewdeck&deckID=1194) was just a fun idea I had toyed around with in the past. I knew playing 98% 2e cards wouldn't be competitive in any tournament but I had always wanted to do it. This was my opportunity to strike! I also thought it might be an interesting excursive for a 2e player to try to build a deck that is similar as the 3 cards from 1e in the deck are all printable (this was done intentionally). My deck was declared by the judges to be so cool that I was bestowed the privilege of designing a future card! They insisted that it be 1E though as I seemed at the time to be very confused about what game I was playing =) One last note: I thought that my deck would have been a candidate for a hybrid between 1E and 2E where a draw deck that contains only 1EC cards should be allowed to play with the costs of the cards and as such be able to play 7 counters in dudes / cards each turn and/or spend counters to draw as in 2e. I think my deck would have been more than balanced when facing any normal OTF deck. Just food for though =)

Round 1Non-AlignedFederationKenneth TuftsFL (-100)View opponent's Report
Ken's Orgy-rific androids were quite a riot. His deck was apparently an open deck that he had built several years ago but because open was out of fashion he had literally shelved the deck for a brighter tomorrow where open wasn't opressed by OTF (not that it is... but I really hate playing open unless there's "cool" in the name of the title of the tournament). His deck seeded 4 "Establish Relations" which were universal and did make me consider stealing them... but that's just not how a 2e deck would do things! Our game was a really interesting matchup because a lot of the weird 2e tech that I had in my deck managed to counter to some degree some of the more abusive stuff in his deck. This included my baked in "Scan" counter as well as my lack of Palor Toffs, my lack of desire to battle, and my discard deck hating Dukat! Ken came prepared to play in an open environment and as such he played dirty with Scans. My deck was Q The Ref-less so no anti scan tech cards here. However, my 2e deck was well prepared for that as Ken was very unfamiliar with 2e dilemmas! I made sure to enforce that 20 second limit in a very condescending manner so that he knew what he was doing wasn't very cool =) His Kivas fajo didn't serve him quite as well as he was hoping but Kivas had a trick up his sleeve. He wasn't busting through my 2e dilemmas all that well and at one point, his Soong reprogramming Lal to share acquisition and treachery from Kivas Fajo so he could get past my Occupational Hazards! What a great moment. Alas, my deck playing usually only one guy a turn was too slow to take on the androids and I suffered a full loss (100 - 0). We both had a good laugh though and I went on to face my favorite opponent of ALL TIME.

Round 2Jeremy CommandeurFW (+100)
Jeremy asked me to take a $1 from him in order for me to go first. I told him that my deck was so slow that in order for me to have a chance I'd need to go first so I told him to keep his money. Jeremy proceeded to seed 6 very steal-able missions (all 40+ points) in all 4 quadrants with access to each quadrant. He seeded a Q-Flash with only 1 card under it. He had a very small deck and piled up some large number of cards under my space missions. I proceeded to take my first turn by playing 1 dude to my outpost and went to draw a card but Jeremy insisted that he got an action before I drew. He special downloaded 4 cards with a containment field showing such that 4 cards went under it. Well, as it turned out, after I drew, Jeremy was unable to take all 4 cards back from under the containment field so it was my turn again! What a swell guy! My slow deck trugged on in this manner with the occasional Parallax arguers from Jeremy asking me if my actions were cool (Jeremy insisted that I tell him my action weren't cool) and what do you know? A seeded Mirror Image from Jeremy gave me several cards draws from Kivas Fajo - Collectors that he played from the Parallax Arguers! Wow! Such generosity! After quite a few turns, I still hadn't drawn a ship and Jeremy had kept giving me card draws. I think I took a good 5 or 6 turns before I could draw a ship. I finally drew the U.S.S. Bellepheron (but without the Sisko that I could play for free on it) and played it so I could attempt a space mission. Upon attempting it, I was greeted with a seeded Cryosatelite and 3 guys for me! 3 really good NA guys all for me! WOW what a great opponent! I also hit a Q-Flash where a "The Naked Truth" gave me Seven of Nine from Jeremy's hand! Wow! At my second space mission, I hit the same thing but this time, under the cryosatelite I also got a Betazoid Gift Box so I got to put 3 cards from my deck into hand! I wish there's been some cool tech like this in my deck, but I was sitting pretty. After 9 or 10 turns without Jeremy taking a single turn, I finished the game 100-0 and Jeremy won the title of being the coolest opponent ever!

Round 3TerranJason DrakeFW (+77)
Jason decided that Crewman Wilson (and only Crewman Wilson) needed that promotion he deserved. In fact, he insisted on making him an Officer, a Scientist, an Engineer, a doctor (with Medical skills) and just about anything he needed in order to make sure that a deck of only Crewman Wilson's could work. This matchup was quite even in the fact that we both got to attempt at least one mission although I don't think Crewman wilson with all of his reflection therapies and his equipment was quite ready for the weird 2E tech. It was funny that He could have gotten passed "God" if "God" had been in my deck (with lower decks and 2 agonizers). He hit my Excaliban Drama and as it turned out, I didn't need to discard any cards from hand to stop his 5 or so Crewman Wilson's (I did discard some "Junk" from my hand anyway though). I at one point wanted to go play Dabo with Crewman Wilson in the Mirror Quadrant but decided that My Enterprise E (2e premiere) couldn't dock at the docking pylons to do that. I did end up winning but my James T. Kirk (Original Thinker) preemptively went out of play to discard the unexamined first card of a space mission which turned out to be "Your Galaxy Is Impure." I think that turning point made all the different in me securing the win. However, it was a cool tournament so winning wasn't what it was about. I laughed my head off in each and every game at all the cool stuff I saw.
