2 mission win DS9 / Earth deck with Transwarp Hub??!! |
Introduction |
My first 2E regional EVER. At that, this was my first high level 2E tournament ever. I wanted to play my best but I knew not to expect to do that well. I have trouble skill tracking, paying attention to what awesome things my opponent's decks can do and I've never played a Borg, Romulan, Dominion, Maquis, Klingon (sort of), and TOS deck before. I'm really a novice at this game in my opinion. I came ready to have fun and to let the chips / cards fall where they may. The deck I made only weeks before for this was inspired by losing to Ed's cadets in the March tournament. He had a two mission win deck that was solid. So I took my deck I lost to him with and made IT a two mission win deck! As I play more 2E, what I've noticed is that skills are not nearly as hard to get as is attributes. Therefore, my deck is focused around getting a lot of already good attributes guys out in play and then pumping them with a J. What happened during the regional humbled me and really shocked me. I want to say thank you to Maggie for running the tournament and say that I have really not had this much fun at a tournament at a long time! Congrats to our victor Al who I think deserved the win with a meta-ready and well prepared Kick-Ass deck. |

Round 1 | | Joshua Sheets | FW (+50) |
A stellar deck. Josh solved the cadet mission quickly and relentlessly. I was able to get rid of his J twice with Luther sloan (man of action) but no matter. He rolled on without much issue. I was able to eventually solve Destroy Transwarp Hub and got +5 points with tallera. Josh also over-costed dilemmas as I had brought Kirk with me so I avoided his bluff by simply not being able to solve the mission without Kirk's additional Cunning. I only managed to squeak out a win because I grav-platted Josh's grav-plate that tried to prevent me from using Transwarp Conduit to get from my first mission (destroy transwarp hub) to get back to earth to pick up dudes to go to restore errant moon (I only had one ship out at the time so getting back to earth that turn would have meant no second mission attempt). I two teamed my way through restore errant moon for the win but Josh did keep me honest. I am almost sure he would have won the game had he gone first. |

Round 2 | | Jason Beyer | FW (-100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Jason had a most interesting deck. I admire Jason always trying to add fun interaction (battle) and some 1E creativity to each of his decks. His deck is a swiss army knife ready for just about any situation. He can come battle you. He can play cheap guys with guinan. He gets help with disadvantage into advantage. I did manage to use the same trick as in the last game (Tallera, Transwarp Hub) and attempted Restore Errant Moon on the same turn I solved Destroy transwarp Hub for 55 points. Jason points out that both he and I can download a consume dilemma to put on top of our piles. We both do (I get No Kill I and he gets probably repressed message). Jason puts out 4 dilemmas and proceeds to flip Repressed message. He consumes for it and I show no Kill I. I think the excitement of being able to stop all my guys with my dilemma threw Jason off a little bit because after he decided to use it, In total, 9 dilemmas were overcome under the mission after the first attempt. Also, unfortunately, jason had yet to complete a mission. Jason was unable to get a mission done before I sent my team of nine to complete. A fun game, and I enjoyed seeing how his decks worked. |
Corbin and I play pretty religiously. We test decks against each other frequently... ...but not our Regionals decks... My deck was slllllooowwwwww going. (My opening hand was 4 events and 3 interrupts). Corbin was playing a two mission win deck with bonus points to ensure quick victory. It was. About twenty minutes in I was shaking his hand in congradulations and we reported a score of 100-0. |

Round 3 | | Michael Moskop | FW (-15)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
I can honestly say this game should have gone to Mike. Mike's E^2 stuff showed me just how much I need to learn about this game. I made a HUGE mistake when Mike attempted his second mission and I put down a No Kill I only thinking that this would stall him long enough for me to pull out some kind of win on my next turn. However, he had the future enterprise's commander which unstopped all of his dudes and gave him his second mission! DO'H! He proceeded to attempt his third mission but I was able to stop him thankfully (can't remember with what). I finished up the Hub, Transwarped over to restore errant moon and attempted. Mike almost had me with a breaking the ice... until we both realized that it was a space dilemma at a planet. Mike told me afterwards that had he thrown down a different dilemma he would have had me. I believe he would have won on his next turn. This game was nerve-wracking (but fun). |
I am still angry with myself. After yesterday, I told myself I would not screw up a dilemma play in this tournament. I did and it cost me the game and a trip to the champion match. |

Round 4 | | Al Schaefer | FL (-100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
The fact that I was up against the only other undefeated player at my first regional was humbling. I honestly thought that there was a screw up in the scoring (no offense Maggie!) but she had been using the website to keep pairings. Anyway, I've never won a constructed name against Al. Therefore, the best I could do was try to not make mistakes and hope for the best. Al was very funny during our game and we were both very relaxed for the game. It did help soften the blow that was Al's awesome deck. It really was firing on all cylinders and there was nothing that could have been done. I really didn't even get a chance. He hit me three times with Hard time in three mission attempts in a row. He had all of his unyieldings out. He could have adapted to any dilemma I threw at him. That was that. He clearly and decisively had the better deck and I congratulate Al on his well deserved victory! |
The last time Corbin and I played was at a sealed deck tournament in March where he beat me in a game that I thought I had in the bag. Historically, this is also the game where the wheels come off and my brain shuts down at CodCon. The last time I had a chance to win at the IL regionals, was in 2010 where I lost to Eric Bieche in Game 4. I was playing Borg on that day and made a horrible mistake late in the game and the loss resulted in MVB winning the tournament. But I had learned from my mistakes that day and was determined to 'seal the deal' against Corbin. Corbin was playing a deck that looked like he was going for a 2-mission win. All his missions were worth 40 points or more so I knew keeping Enterprise-J off the table would be key. The Borg downloading machine worked perfectly and Corbin suffered the full force of all the Borg have to offer. Interrupts like Adapt and The First of Many (which had been hiding all day) finally showed up. By my last mission attempt I also had all 3 copies of Unyielding on table and Corbin had little chance of stopping my team. I was able to keep Corbin at bay by destroying the Enterprise-J and using Hard-Time to limit his crews and force him to keep returning to his headquarters. No mistakes this time, a dominating shut-out win was a spectacular end to a great day! |
