Introduction |
I decided to throw together a quick Equinox deck for what I thought would be a lighthearted and low-key regional for 2E in Forest City. Boy was I wrong. The basic plan was to get the Equinox out and staffed quickly and then use the cool Nucleogenic tricks. It worked reasonably well in solver versus solver match-ups, but struggled against interactive decks. I learned I need to practice more to get better at Modern (post-CC) Trek 2E. |

Round 1 | | Greg Hodgin | FL (0)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Greg DID NOT play Romulans today. That was a pretty big shock. But not as big as the shockingly bad opening hand I got. I ended up having to discard one of my Maxwell Burke's after doing the download of Finding Our Way and getting U.S.S. Equinox. Eventually (as in like, turn 4?) I went out to attempt a mission with Ransom and Co. Greg stopped me easily with Gomtuu and killed my hand (there goes the other copy of Burke) with The Dreamer and the Dream. On his turn, he used an event (I believe it was Ensnared?) to capture Ransom. Look, I have no more command stars in the deck. I played it out just to throw dilemmas at Greg and he used Central Command to laugh them off. Ouch. |
Scott. Ah, Scott. Good guy, but I play him a LOT. Last time I saw him was Dragoncon last year; I was playing my Cardassian capture deck, and he was playing an Equinox deck, which meant no headquarters for him. Unfortunate for him; Ensnared was cruel to him. I managed to capture all of his command stars and therefore he wasn't able to fly his ship and kept only trying his one mission. My deck ran relatively smoothly and I was able to burn through his dilemmas on my planet and space mission, with a labor camp taking me over the top, 100-0. |

Round 2 | | Mike Camp Sr | FW (0) |
I'm the guy that taught Mike how to play 2E (and Trek in general for that matter) so this was a fun game. He used to have a great Klingon deck (and had a nickname of "The Killing Klingon" in the old Decipher days) but this deck had somehow gotten watered down. He did a couple of engagements with me for points but otherwise I ran right over most of his dilemmas. As I said, we need to play more often. We're getting old and rusty. |

Round 3 | | James Atchley | FW (0) |
I taught Kyle how to play as well and facing him was a fun experience. He is a new player (only playing in THIS regional!) and a new Star trek fan - he's only ever seen Star Trek: Enterprise! So I gave him a Starfleet deck with Damaged Archer and all of them. He did reasonably well with playing people and attempting missions. He still needs a little work on the whole dilemma theory. |

Nick is one more of my proteges - wow this was the day I faced three former students - as I taught him how to play 2E at DragonCon 2010. He did a GREAT job with this deck, eventually locking me completely out of the game like Greg did in round 1 - but with more aplomb. Nick used Biogenic Weapon and later Strange New Worlds to make it where I had no hope of scoring enough points to win the game. Eventually, I conceded and we played a pick-up game which I also lost, LOL! The only advice I have for my former student is build a slightly better dilemma pile. Those dilemmas were no problem it was the events that I couldn't handle. And Nick got the opportunity to give me the Darth Vader speech from Episode IV: "When I left you I was but the learner, now I am the master!" |
Scott and Nathan are the two guys that got me interested in trek and taught me the game. It was really awesome being able to play them in the tournament. He's playing his equinox deck. I get out 3 maquis very quickly and biogenic weapon his Inversion Mystery. He didn't realize it could play on space missions. I manage to catch him with Dreamer twice, getting rid of most of his nucleogenic cards. Cascade virus hits angelo to stop him from getting them back. He powers through a planet mission with some bad dilemma plays from me. I manage to stall him at his second planet mission, though, long enough for me to play strange new worlds on it. I follow it up with Organized Terrorist to filter out the last of his nucleogenic cards. He has no law in his deck. We look at the clock and see that there's 35 minutes left for me to complete two missions. He can't possibly win, so he concedes the match. |
