Tournament Report - 2E |

Quintessential Borg |
Introduction |
I was so excited to host this tournament at Your Local Game Store in Matthews, NC especially after the store ordered a combo display box of Star Trek 2E Priemere! And then the day before the tournament, four players canceled. I was crushed and I just knew we'd never be able to sanction. Then, the night of the event at 6:45 p.m., Chris Coyle showed up! And then I taught two people how to play. Ryan didn't get to stay for the tournament but he loved the game so much he purchased one of those starters from the combo box! But, Marty Connell agreed to play and we had ourselves an event! |

Round 1 | | Marty Connell | FW (+65) |
It was not only Marty's first tournament, but his first game! I got a VERY slow start as I saw no Quintessence in my first 12 cards or so - a real tough start for my Euro-style Borg. I also didn't want to crush Marty since it was his first game, but he didn't need my coddling him. He got into the swing of things easily enough (as he's a shrewd card and board game player who even hosts his own gaming podcast - Rolling Dice and Taking Names!) and had a nice crew out early enough with my TNG Feds demo deck! I threw dilemmas at him sparingly, but he had plenty of duplicated skills. It wasn't long before he had solved a mission for 30 points and earned 5 bonus points! I was starting to sweat after he got 4 dilemmas overcame underneath his second mission before I had even staffed a Borg ship. Thankfully, I finally pulled the Quintessences I needed to download Borg Queen and Locutus and went after Assimilate Resistance. After I added Beverly Crusher to the collective from Marty's discard pile, I was able to use Knowledge and Experience and Unyielding to good effect and solve Stop First Contact for the win! It was great to teach a new player how to play this game and get this event sanctioned! |

Round 2 | | Nathan Miracle | FW (+100) |
It came down to Nathan and I for first place and I drew an amazing opening hand including Locutus, Borg Queen and Sphere 634! I was also able to get Quintessence as my first card drawn and found an Unyielding by my third turn. I was able to stop Nathan's modified Commodities deck several turns in a row and brutally kill off several of his peeps with a Tragic Turn plus Overburdened combo! Thanks to my cunning use of Ohhh, Nothing Happened - to name Hard Time - my Borg were able to outlast Nathan's dilemma pile and I actually cruised to a victory as his dilemmas left him high and dry. Full win for the collective, European Style! |

Closing Thoughts |
Thanks to Nathan, Chris and new player Marty Connell for helping this event get sanctioned and showing our new store that there are enough Trek players in the Charlotte NC area to warrant them carrying booster packs! |
