Papa Archer's Starship 2.0 |
Introduction |
Our 2E regional for 2015! |
|
Round 1 | | Kevin Reitzel | MW (+10) |
Kevin has been playing his Deep Space Nine Holding Cell build for some time now, and I have beaten it in the past with Papa Archer's Starship. This game, I made a critical error when I pitched my entire hand to a Vulcan Tricorder so I could use D'Vela to gain a key skill to get around a Whispers in the Dark. I was able to solve my second mission thanks to that little maneuver, but I had to throw away 6 perfectly good personnel that were hanging out in my hand. In retrospect, I believe if I had kept the warm bodies and played them later in the game I could have solved my third mission and actually won. Instead, I had to settle for the mod win as time ran out and I only had five personnel left in play and an empty draw deck. |

Round 2 | | Mike Camp Sr | FW (+100) |
Big Mike has finally built a new deck and it is focusing on Law and Telepathy. Thankfully for me, my dilemma pile cares little about that and instead was glad to see some Federation personnel on his side of the table to take advantage of Moral Choice. A MC followed by a Where No One Has Gone Before was the brutal, back-breaking move of this game. Meanwhile, on my side of the table I'm running on all cylinders with A Sight for Sore Eyes, and And What Cost? going off almost every turn for three turns in a row thanks to Straight and Steady downloading the AWC. I get two turns-worth of counters while Big Mike loses turns to Where No One has Gone Before. It's a short match. |

Round 3 | | Nathan Miracle | FL (-65) |
Nathan is all teched out against Kevin's deck as we had seen it before at the Cardassia regional. And while he didn't build the deck specifically to beat Papa Archer's Starship it sure feels that way as he uses Dukat and Weyoun to smash my events and hide all my good characters like Phlox, Damaged Archer and Maximilian Forest. I have one good play where I use a Grav-plating trap to throw my Trellium-D at his Christening (just like in the Cardassia regional - only that time he was playing a Romulan deck) but he eventually finds a ship and delays me enough that by the time he is out attempting missions I'm just watching the game. Ah well, he was due a win against this Starfleet At What Cost? build and I was glad to see him returning to running Terok Nor. He's good with it. |

Round 4 | | David Abelson | FW (+100) |
Dave is one of our new Cadets as I've been teaching some people how to play in 2015. However, he's yet to build his own deck to play. He downloaded this one from the site and I must say it was a HUGE mess. The draw deck and dilemma pile were both over 40 cards (maybe more!) and he struggled to find the general purpose/plan for the deck. He also made the rookie mistake of attempting a planet first and I made him pay for it with a Necessary Execution as my first dilemma. My multi-turn strategy kicked in and I was able to get a fairly easy win. Sorry Dave, but at least you learned something - Never Go Planet First! |

Closing Thoughts |
While not quite as many players as last week's regional in Cardassia, I felt 9 was a great number for us! And, both of my sons played in this year's event so Papa Archer had his proud moment and I had mine! |
