Tournament Report - 1E - Sector 001 Regional

DominionDominion for block 2.0
Introduction
I decided to make a small change to my Dominion deck from our final League event and add The First Stable Wormhole to reduce the span of GQ missions. It worked very well! Unfortunately for me, I neglected to add in some Ablative Armor (and an AU door) to be prepared for battle decks.

Round 1KlingonRyan SuttonFL (-35)
Ryan made the drive from Tennessee just to play in our Regional so I was elated to see him! And was less than happy to see his traditional Klingon battle deck. I had one fleeting moment of hope when I realized I didn't have to seed my own Bajoran Wormholes with The First Stable Wormhole - until Ryan seeded his own copy and brought out his wormholes. "I added these in case you decided to hide in the Gamma Quadrant" he said. And then apologized at having brought the same old thing. Oh well, nothing for it but to give it the old college try. In retrospect, I should've started trying to clear dilemmas from missions on my turn 1, but waiting until turn 2 to send out some scouting parties probably lost me the game. I ALMOST cleared the space mission in enough time, but was 1 computer skill shy of having the 4 Computer Skill necessary to clear Virus and that left my ship stuck in space for Ryan's fleet of five K'Vorts to blow it to kingdom come. I was able to rebuild after a good Regenerate, but his B-team was still in the Alpha Quadrant clearing dilemmas while I was playing guys and drawing cards. It was close, but he eventually got past my dilemmas while I was stymied by his combo at Founder Homeworld. I needed one more turn of dilemma clearing and I might would have won. Unfortunately, range still turned out to be a problem as I was trying to hide from his K'Vorts. If only I had been able to play my Dosi Trading Vessel a the Dosi Trading Post and been one mission closer to my space mission. Sadly, that errata didn't come out until AFTER our regional, LOL! Good show Ryan, I'll find a non-Ferengi way around that battle deck some day.

Round 2ByeBY (0)
The Bye was welcomed at this point.

Round 3KlingonMike Camp SrFW (+25)
Big Mike's Klingons aren't nearly as battle happy as Ryan's and in this game I made sure not to seed my Bajoran Wormholes. Mike's dilemma combos were fairly annoying this game but getting to draw extra cards with Reward from the Founders and Surprise Party really helped me power through them.

Round 4KlingonNathan MiracleFW (+65)
It turns out Nathan was playing the same deck as Ryan - draw deck wise. I recognized it almost immediately and the two of them had just played to a True Tie in the preceding round! This time I decided to attempt missions as soon as possible, and found that Nathan HAD made changes to the seed deck. He also did things slightly differently than Ryan, only moving to the Gamma Quadrant to get set up for an attack after a couple of turns. That delay gave me enough of a chance to finish my space mission and get back down on the Dosi planet before my ships started being destroyed. The game winning move was using Call for Reinforcements to download a ship to my Great Link so I could finally attempt HQ: Secure Homeworld since "GOD" was parked on the planet. Whew! Freakin' Klingons!

Closing Thoughts
A 9-player regional for 1E?!?! What is this 1998? Anyway, we ALSO had a new player for this event in Richard Crandall who is one of our Cadets in the Charlotte, N.C. area having returned to 1E after more than a decade away. And, both of my sons toughed it out to finish up the day of tournaments. Our final round ended at about 11:30 p.m. - way past their usual bed time, LOL!
