Tournament Report - 2E - Cardassia Regional
2016-04-16 - 01:00 PM
DS9A common DS9 deck.
Introduction
For this Regionals I did something I rarely ever do for 2E. I straight up copied a deck, no modifications. Ken Tufts put together a super-fast DS9 deck, designed to get out and complete missions faster than most decks can even think about setting up.

Round 1TOSScott BaughmanFW (+95)
Scott and I have tested his Species 8472 quite a bit, so I have learned quite a bit about counteracting them. And counteract them I did. I quickly got up to 14 personnel in play, and instead of sending large attempts sent attempts of six each time. Many of the Species 8472 dilemmas did little themselves, so I knew giving Scott as few dilemma choices as possible would run him into some bad dilemma draws. My plan worked, and while Scott nearly had enough dilemmas in his core to win by the end, he did not have his first mission done. Of course, putting James T. Kirk in the Holding Cell helped.

Round 2KlingonRachel LewisFW (+95)
I recognize the classic Klingon mission set-up immediately, but Rachel went for Cardassia IV before attempting Investigate Alien Probe. It took several attempts, but I finally made her pay by killing off Martok and Klag with Necessary Execution, leaving Rachel bereft of Leadership. A Precise Attack altered my play a bit. I completed one space mission quick enough to avoid any engagements, then focused on my planet mission. Only once I had committed to this path did I realize my mistake. Rachel had the I.K.S. Ning'tao, and Torga IV was about to hand her points! Once I completed Torga IV, I turtled for a turn at DS9, allowing me to play a second ship. With the U.S.S. Centaur and the Xhosa now in play, I completed the second space mission in a single turn (but multiple attempts!). Of course, putting Kahmis in the Holding Cell helped.

Round 3VoyagerGreg HodginFL (-40)View opponent's Report
Greg and I both have incredibly speedy decks. Frankly, he's a good enough dilemma pile player to slow down even the speediest of decks. I did hold him off at Caretaker's Array for a while, but Voyager 5-space really hits the accelerator once it completes that first mission. At Inversion Mystery, I drew three planet dilemmas, Fractured Time and The Dal'rok. Ugh. Free mission for him, but I threw all five just to clean up my own dilemma pile. That terrible draw made a big difference, as Greg named Moral Choice upon completing the mission. Greg also played a couple extra interrupts to blow up Holding Cell. I would have had the game on my next turn (we played it out), but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. Of course, putting Revised Chakotay in the Holding Cell helped.

Round 4MaquisMichael SchwartzFL (-35)
Schwartz locked me out. I realized too late that I had no Law in my deck, so Strange New Worlds kept me out of one of my missions and Biogenic Weapon kept me out of another. I knew I could complete Historical Research, so I planned to do so, then blow up Biogenic Weapon with Tacking Into the Wind. Unfortunately Michael hit me with Dreamer and the Dream and Racial Tensions, which got one of my two Archaeology. With no remaining event destruction, the rest of the game became academic. I still threw dilemmas at Michael, but towards as time approached I started purposely throwing them poorly to avoid the modification on his win. Of course, Holding Cell doesn't help when you cant do your own missions.

Closing Thoughts
I want to make one change to this deck. Add in William Ross. He has Law, covering the 23rd skill. He may have a printed cost of 4, but once you complete Investigate Destruction he can play for 0. As is our custom, Greg and I played a second game in our round. I broke out my Regionals-winning Terok Nor deck from last year, and he grabbed a Damaged Starfleet deck. Apparently we wanted to replay Worlds from a few years ago! Weyoun kept Archer busy, so Terok Nor won the rematch.
