Tournament Report - 1E - Online Event (Mission to Talos IV)

Talos IV.8 - Voy09
Introduction
My draft pool was quite good in terms of the draw deck. There weren't any cards which downloaded other cards (thinned the deck) but oh well. I was also missing any Diplomats and had only the one Law so I never red shirted my precious Nimira. What I was thin on was dilemmas, which caused me to search for more seed cards. TMW was worthless as I didn't draft a Dr. Telek R'mor. I threw down a Villagers with Torches which did nothing for me all tournament since Lack of Prep serves that function fine. I also used a Home Away from Home, which Matt pointed out to me in R4 wouldn't actually do anything since Intrepid is an AQ ship in the DQ which would allow AQ people to report for free Federation AQ people to the ship (which don't exist in the format). I had always though that the purpose of the Common Intrepid was to give players who had not yet pulled th Rare Voyager or Rare Equinox the ability to play Feds, but not the first time I was wrong. It's likely that I had a few illegal plays in previous games. But considering tht I always had to return home for Nimira anyway, I don't think that my cheating won me any games. I had briefly thought of going full on fed battle, and in retrospect it might have worked better.

Round 1MarkFW (-65)View opponent's Report
Mark and I started out quite slow, playing a couple cards and passing it until each of us had a nice stack. Although I built the deck to go space first, I was having a hell of a time drawing any Medical. Once I had a ton of Astrophysics, Engineer, and the mission skills but only the one medical I attempted and soon regretted it. Mark had seeded a the Cloud first and my ship was stopped for a turn. That's when I drew old Dr. Fitzgerald (x2) meaning that if I had waited one more turn I could have run it. Mark started attempting his Outpost mission (a planet) and made quick work of my weak dilemmas. Actually, he might have won if he'd attempted earlier. Then he went out to planet but didn't quite have the skills to bust the dilemmas (though I only had the two). While he flew his poor range ship home and back over the next couple turns to fetch Nimira (I think it was), I ran at my planet mission and found that he also had shit dilemmas, thereby allowing me to win by a turn. This also means that had Mark gone first, the game would have been his.

Round 2Danny NuttallFL (+70)
I made one change to my deck after Round 1, I added in Kes. I had issues drawing Medical against Mark and since Kes plays for free she can get an extra draw the turn she is played thereby paying for herself. Danny had a beast of a deck which even included a Pendari Champ. He went out to kill my Kes alone on Ocampa. This is where I feel that I made a big mistake as Ocampa was close to my end, I should have played my shuttle and sent two ships over for battle. The damage from his ship would have prevented returning to his outpost and thereby allowed my to destroy it and hopefully slow him down a turn or two. Instead, I tried to get lucky throwing down at space early. Big mistake as Danny had some real doosies for dilemmas. I beleive that it was Macrovirus (with me lacking Science) where Dan picked off an Engineer, followed by The Swarm, and finally a RAGS. I only got lucky as my Space mission was far away as my damaged ship would have been easy pickins. His dilemma combo picked off Engineers in order to slow down the movement of the Garbage scow and that worked well enough to slow me and allows his win.

Round 3KazonMichael Van BreemenFW (+25)View opponent's Report
Going up against Mike, I was keeping in mind my error against Danny. He went space first even though his outpost was at a planet, then I sued Blue Alert and a Shuttle to launch over and blow up his Intrepid (seriously one shotted it). I ditched the shuttle mid-spcaline so that I could launch back out the father planet mission once I had cleared the space and returned the Intrepid to my Outpost. By the time I got there, a number of skills had built up allowing me to run at the space mission. This wouldn't have been enough to win me the game, really, as Mike's dilemmas were still better than mine. The issue he had was that his remaining ships had no Transports (were Kazon) and he couldn't beam down to his planet mission. He finally got an=hold of some transporter tech a turn too late.

Round 4KazonMatthew ZinnoFW (-50)View opponent's Report
This game was rather interesting as we both had decent decks and yet, due to odd choices, ran it quite a few turns. I was smarter with the space mission this time and actually waited for the right skills. Or perhaps I just got luckier on the draws, never saw Kes this game, though. Seeing that Matt was close to winning, but screwed on a single ship with no range (though his Kazon shuttle at least had transporters), I risked launching my shuttle all the way out to the 2nd planet to try and bust a fake dilemma, which it wasn't. It was an implication. I played Nimira, but had a long way to fly home and back and a risk of Matt actually drawing a decent ship. So I returned the interpid to the middle mission and met it up with a shuttle carrying Stadi and Nimira. I then left Nimira and Stadi (and the mission skills) on board the shuttle in order to spare them from red shirting and thereby leave me with the Law and range needed to get to the farther space the next turn if needed. this was a poor choice as I blew through all of Matts dilemmas only to find another Implication. The unstopped people on the ship had the skills for the mission and the dilemma but not enough attributes for Implication so I had to let it go another turn. Luckily, Matt still didn't draw a new ship and I had a choice of which mission to solve, I went with Liberation since we were already there.
