Tournament Report - 1E

FederationGurney Halleck's Sweet Ass Revenge
Introduction
This was the biggest non-Regional event to happen in Seattle, and the first Seattle event that was won by a Non-canadian in at least a year. We actually had 4 natives, which is the first time that 4 Washingtonians played in the same First Edition tournament since the release of Holodeck Adventures (possibly exagerated, but not by much).

Round 1KlingonHuong VanFW (+60)
Round 1 was against my nephew, Huong. This was good as he hadn't played 1E in quite a while. He just happened to be at my house, so I handed him my old Klingon deck (from a tournament back in May) and this tournament gave me a chance to show him how to play it (though he promptly forgot). The spaceline was fairly split with his missions on one side and mine on another. I put my outpost in an optimal position to be able to wander out to the most missions and started setting up for (got the Mission Specialists for) my favorite two. I attempted first, as my deck was certainly the faster one. The Higher The Fewer cost me 10 points. But I did solve two missions for 50 points each and even snagged the 15 off a V'ger (glad that didn't get me). Huong played personnel smoothly with my guidance, but he kept getting distracted on what mission he wanted to clear, so each had just a few dilemmas cleared under each. This may have been due (read: definitely was due to), the Nexus which I had set off.

Round 2FederationChris MaddenFW (+100)
This was an interesting game. I was paired down as we had 3 winners in R1. Chris' deck had no play or draw engines and was going at the fine 1 a turn speed. His dilemmas worked fine against me, though. Actually, they were the most effective dilemmas I saw all day. The first one I found was a Lack of Prep (so again, down to -10 out of the gate). The wall Emergency Conversion shut me out of a space mission, as I hadn't drawn into those skills. I trudged on while dumping skills and solved two missions for 50 each, and got a bonus 5 off a Replicator Accident, while setting off the Nexus. I just needed to either clear a 3rd mission or deliver Dr. Soren to his afterlife. Because the Nexus was set off before I completed the planet mission (where I found the LoP), I had to wait a turn for the delivery or rescue in the Zone, so rather than fly directly in, I set up my Runabout to get swallowed at the end of Chris' next (last) turn. Chris split his very few people between two different planet mission attempts. Neither got very far, then Dr. S found his peace.

Round 3Romulandetze001FW (+30)
This was the only close game I had the whole tournament (and it was damned close). Andrew, on the other hand, had to face Tufts and me in this event. Andrew's deck was TNG Romulans and it had all the play engines and easily out ran mine. He made quick work of two of his space missions. I stopped or slowed him quite a bit and had 3 of his ships damaged, but he started attempting on Turn 1, so it wasn't long before he was just looking for a planet. But my planet combos are better than the space in this deck (apparently), and poor Andrew hadn't stocked much Medical/Exobiology/Biology. It didn't hurt that I had targeted those throughout. I cleared my planet mission for 50, with no loss of points this time, and then cleared the space. Only trouble being, Andrew had a doubled Crystaline Entity (with Lore) which promptly wiped out my crew. This left just the people I needed to solve. But I was mission 2 of the key specialists to make a it a 50. My problem was that I had run out of hand and since I had nothing to play, I wasn't getting the CM draws. I inevitably drew until I had 3 cards to dump with a handshake in order to track down a Nanoprobe resucitation for bounce playing (Commandeur Maneuver) the Assign Mission Specialist to download those two key peeps (Guisti and Barclay). I ended up not needing to use the Handshake as the 3rd card was NanoRes. Meanwhile, Andrew was drawing hard into his deck to track down key peeps. I only happened to get lucky and beat him to the punch.

Closing Thoughts
Dude. Danny, I told you that deck was tight.
