Introduction |
I wanted to get Jupiter/Chain Reaction Ricochet working, I figured this would be a good tournament to try that. Some free plays with Sherman's Peak, Halkan Council and the Office, and Processing Ore on Mirror Terok Nor with Slar (and extra draws if you can get Morn to Mirror Quark's Bar). Redshirting with Mirror Ferengi and the Mirror Feds. Weak spots with not enough Chekov or Geology, and Jupiter and the Chain Reaction is a bit too much hassle to get going. Never used Saavik and No-Win Scenario, that was a bit of a waste of time, too. Oh well, you live and learn. |

Round 1 | | Charlie Plaine | FL (-40) |
Round 1 - vs MidnightLich:
Man, my deck seemed quicker when I was testing it out. Fortunately, Charlie's deck was pretty slow, too. Because of the missions he chose to do, he needed to complete 4 to win. Edo Probe put him off one mission, he returned to it later when he had 60 points and swept through Dead End. The Officer/Leadership drain combination worked well and filled up his discard pile. The Arsenal/Denevan/Fracture combo added another Away Team to the pile, and Volcanic Eruption/Horta/Duonetic Field Generator did its job and sent more to the pile. After a couple of turns he realised he didn't need to be losing his team 2 each turn, he could use the Guardian to escape, as he was on Gateway.
He had to use his Regenerate in order to complete Gateway, it took him a while to get his folk back. My Regenerate would have been useless as he had Things Past Dukat out. And got him out the turn before I drew Process Ore, which hampered that idea.
The Ferengi were useless for scouting the one mission with a Ferengi affiliation symbol, but they came in handy going through the dilemmas under the other Mirror mission. Unscientific Method came to a tie between Mr Spock and First Officer Spock and so I lost the non-Mirror one, which worked out for teaming up the Mirror Feds and Ferengi.
I got Enterprise-A out to the outpost and DL'd James T., but it couldn't withstand an assault by 2 Captain's Logged Klingon ships including the Qam'chee (opposing ship attributes-1), and my USS Constitution commandeered by Kavok.
I completed my two Mirror missions for 60 points, Charlie beat Historical Research for the win before I could head back to Chart Stellar Cluster (I tried it earlier, Dead End).
Charlie's Mirror Image mainly helped him, but toward the end it helped me as well, when he started using his own Kivas's. Also, the Guardian of Forever didn't quite work as well as he thought (or me, I forgot you could only move one way on a turn, and so called him on it only when he wasn't moving someone from Gateway to the Time Location first)
Yes, quite an eventful round, was fun.
Final score: Charlie 135, me 60. |

Round 2- vs startrekccggeek
OK, this was fun right from the seed phase: we shared Espionage Mission and Disrupt Alliance, so neither of those really seemed worth attempting. It did mean I could redistribute a dilemma or two, so I moved Edo Probe in front of the duals, and stuck Dead End under Espionage Mission. Volcanic Eruption didn't hit because he put an Outpost on Free Orion Slaves, where I seeded that combo, Horta got one person but no end-of-turn hits, and the androids and others he didn't send down to do the mission beamed down before the end of the turn to take out Duonetic Field Generator.
Under Orion Slaves he got Zefram Cochrane's Telescope, so he peeked at the Theta-Radiation Poisoning combo. He waited a turn, but managed to get through that. Macrovirus killed Dr Soong, which by this stage in the game was already only an inconvenience. Then he peeked at Edo Probe and the Duals. Then the next turn he attempted it, but because of issues with Range for the Scow (and the skills he had at his disposal at that time), he lost the Edo points and had to come back a little later.
I got Where No Man out quite quickly, so was getting draws from that. Morn didn't make an appearance and by the time Process Ore showed up in my hand it really wasn't worth using it. The Mirror Ferengi and the Mirror Feds were my dilemma-busting team. Mr Nog made it into play much later, I was using Mr Brunt, Mr Quark and Mr Rom. Mr Brunt died first, wouldn't you know it, followed by Mr Quark. So no downloading of more Ferengi.
I did manage to clear out the dilemmas under Chart Stellar Cluster, but the skills hadn't materialised to complete it, even after Friendly fire had counted down.
I tried Automated Repair Station, hit Scout Encounter with the ISS Enterprise (+James Tiberius), and managed to win the battle vs the Vidiian Scout (and kill its only crew member).
Final score: 110:0. I got the 0.

Round 3 - vs Warpaw
Hooo boy. What can I say other than "Borg!"
The magnificent Ferengi were somewhat more helpful this time. A couple got assimilated, the other two died but couldn't download the others because they'd been assimilated. Borg Cutting Beam and multiplexor drone took their toll. I did manage to solve Disrupt Alliance, Mine Dilithium and Agricultural Assessment (but lost 10 points with 2xHazardous Duty), I cleared out the dilemmas under Automated Repair Station, but all my Physics were assimilated. I got rid of one dilemma under Chart Stellar Cluster, but all my Stellar Cartography were assimilated so it wasn't worth trying further. I wiped out the dilemmas under Earth, but that wiped out all but 2 of my personnel (who were on another ship), and the game ended before I could get them back. The Tactical Cube was at Hull-95% at one point, but Regenerate repaired it and I had no real chance to get my personnel back after that. I actually used Regenerate a few times for the discard pile to draw deck function. Chain Reaction Pulsar was a wash as I was only battling against one ship.
This game was a fun, action-packed game, that ended with Warpaw scoring 130 points, and me scoring 80. |

Round 4: vs ladyslew
Well, the Ferengi trick worked, to some extent. They managed to clear out some dilemmas, but I didn't get the OS Mirror folks out to complete missions there. I got Morn to Mirror Terok Nor for some extra draws. Jaresh Inyo, Admiral McCoy and Spock redshirted Agricultural Assessment, McCoy got relocated with Hippocratic Oath, Jaresh with Male's Love Interest and Plague Ship. The Plague Ship half of that dilemma dispatched Spock. My OS folk (minus a Mr Spock, who'd helped to ferry Morn) cleared out the other dilemma, but no Spock, Chekov or Geology prevented a mission completion there. Personal Duty/Command Decisions/Subspace Fracture stopped a bunch of Klingons, and killed four. Unfortunately, there was still more than enough Honor for Wormhole Negotiations to be completed next turn, with a Mission Specialist. Edo Probe stopped a Council Of Warriors, ladyslew's first attempt, but after Wormhole Negotiations, Dead End wasn't a problem. Volcanic Eruption/Horta/Duonetic Field Generator hit beautifully, slowly wiping out a no-ENGINEER Away Team. Ladyslew sacrificed Kang to complete that mission, A Good Day To Live. Then she headed to Earth for the battle. At this point, I was saving a Q the Ref for Defend Homeworld [as opposed to a Temporal Vortex for a Mirror mission completion], so I used that to download Jupiter, a matching commander or two, and some Security. Starship Enterprise, Enterprise-A, Jupiter and Thunderchild, with Captain's Log and Wall Of Ships, Weapons 40, against Ning'tao and Pagh [Ning'tao had Kor on board]. Plus a seeded Chain Reaction Pulsar, which I finally got to use. As it was the battle that met the win conditions for the game, I'm not quite convinced that the Ricochet was worth the seed slot.
Fun game, ending score 110 to 0. As you've probably gathered, I didn't get the 110, but that wouldn't be entirely unexpected :) |
