Round 1 - vs The Mad Vulcan:
J was running with TNG Feds paired with TNG Cardassians.
He shot out of the blocks with an early Lower Decks. I got an early Geordi and Ocular Implants, but I didn't ever use them. I got Surprise Party out quickly, too.
TMV attempted first, and hit Hanonian Land Eel. He was short on Security, so Ocett took one for the team, and headed for the discard pile. Dig put her back under the deck. A turn or so later, he reattempted. Flash Plasma Storm killed the women (Vash, Commander Troi, and Hannah Bates), then Denevan Neural Parasites killed 3 out of the 7 remaining folk (Jean-Luc Picard, Daro and Chris Hobson dived right into the discard pile, Admiral Riker was saved by a hand weapon.
A couple of Mission Specialists made Reported Activity worth 45 points.
About at this point I got Duck Blind working, with Lam and Odera'Klen2E.
I downloaded Homefront about here, too, getting Founder reporting on Earth.
Mr Vulcan attempted Repair Mission. Stellar Core Fragment was the first dilemma, and he'd lost all his Physics and Science that were out, so couldn't get past that. For the rest of the game. This combination could turn out to be pretty good.
Moving across to Dyson Sphere, J attempted there. Gul Madred was sucked through a Hull Breech, and he took Gibson with him. Ankari Spirits was next. J tried to get out of it by having Miles O'Brien (Fajo) download Near-Warp Transport, unfortunately he was at the next mission so we decided it probably didn't work. Even if it had, he couldn't have beamed any of the Cardassians, due to a certain restriction box...
After all that, Telle and Leah Brahms swelled the ranks of the choir singing the Discard Pile Blues. The skills were there to cure Ankari Spirits at this point, so away they went.
Next turn, next up was Macrovirus. The choices came down to a Hologram (Dr Leah Brahms) and not-a-Hologram (Macet). Macet died. The skills were not around for the mission (Physics was still missing, after the lamentable death of Hannah Bates).
I'd gone to the Gamma Quadrant and back, picking up some folk from the Founders' Homeworld. I got my Lower Decks out at this point.
I went and attempted Investigate Massacre. Hanonian Land Eel. Lacking Science. O'Brien Founder died.
J attempted yet another mission. Microbrain stopped Prot, and Psychic Receptacle stopped Beverly Crusher. Garak Has Some Issues hit, but the poor randomly-selected schmuck was Norah Satie, who failed to kill anyone else (unhelped by things like Lower Decks and War Room, which was on Cardassia).
I got back with the E and sent a modified Away Team to face the mighty Eel. This time I had Science, and with the Jem'Hadar obviously a bunch of Security. With 2 War Rooms and Lower Decks in play, and a Phaser Rifle present, we shot that wurrm up goooood.
Denevan Neural Parasites. What kind of mean-spirited old person would play with such a card? (oh wait, I did the same card also behind the Eel this game.) All the Feds were selected, and I chose to save Krajensky Founder, to not face the next dilemma right then.
J solved Kressari Rendezvous, pitching 3 weapons to make it 40 points. This took him to 85.
Got more folk, brought them back. Hit Medical Crisis. It stopped Bashir Founder, and Beverly Crusher was not present, so it went back under. Also needed another Biology, not in play yet.
TMV's Beverly Crusher and a replayed Ocett cured Garak's Issues.
TMV, with a severe Physics shortage (and no Regenerate) headed for Save Stranded Crew. Founder Secret, was easily passed, Caretaker's Guests and Artillery Attack killed 5 folk, the mission was solved for 30 points, taking TMV to a 115-0 win.

(cheating off Mark's answers)
Given Mark's choice of missions, I quickly concluded that he was playing Dominion -which is to say that this should be an easy win. After all, there are a select number of people in the world who can play Dominion well and I know I'm not one. He had a number of Dominion favorite missions + Earth (for the Homefront play engine) and then he finally confirmed my suspicion by tossing down a Founder Homeworld.
However, I was quite wrong on two accounts. Mark was playing Federation/ Dominion Treaty and the deck was quite good. I honestly barely won this game.
Then again, Mark had no clue that I was running Federation/Cardassian Treaty, and that would be a bit of a surprise for all of my opponents.
It would seem that I attempted the planet mission first (that would be the only time this tournament), likely because I got Lower Decks going early and an early gun. After heavy losses to a Hanonian Land Eel + Flapjacks combo, I did solve Reported Activity for 45 points. Meanwhile, mark was getting every draw engine in the game going on the other side, as one can never have too many draws.
At this point, things went from awesome to bad real quick. It became quite obvious that my deck was lacking in Physics and Science. Mark's Stellar Core Fragment shut me out of the first space mission that I went after (I've never seen it played in a 1E game). Then I cleared the second (Dyson Sphere) only to realize that it REQUIRES Physics. So two missions that I can't complete due to a lack of physics. here I was drawing into my deck to get the skill (though there was only one Physicist on the deck) and had already spent my Mutations and Digs on early game draws.
In evitably, I did get the Science for Stellar Core Fragment, but I figured that it was pointless to reattempt that mission as the combo would likely be SCF + Unscientific method + Scientific Method, which would just be more dead personnel and an unsolved mission. At this point, a lot of bodies had been piled up from Mark's dilemmas and I only had one mission solved.
Finally, I attempted my 3rd and final space mission; Kressari Rendevous. This dilemma combo was easier though also chocked full of 2E goodness and I got a bit lucky when Garak Has Some Issue randomly selected Norah Satie as Lower Decks and HQ: War Room made her the dumbest person in play (also; why she was promote to Admiral).
When I did bring the solvers to Kressari Rendevous, I had both my guns AND had tossed a Holodeck Door to get my '45 Dom as a third for sale hand weapon (they seriously spent money on a bottle of champagne made of light). Once I had my two missions; planet and space, I just needed to deliver Tolian Soren to the Nexus. however, the Nexus wasn't in play. I learned my lesson here of seeding it under my opponent's mission (that I couldn't attempt) as Mark had not yet picked the right mission.
So I went after my mission farthest from my outpost (save stranded crew). The combo, again, obliterated my away team (Founder Secret + The Caretaker's Guests + Artillary Attack) leaving my only personnel in play those who are needed to solve the mission.

Round 2 | | Jon Carter | FL (-100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Round 2 - vs pfti:
Mr Carter was playing with a Delta deck, which I haven't seen in a regular tournament for a while. He played 4 Kobayashi Marus, leaving Earth and Investigate Anomaly II free.
Surprise Party was in my opening hand, and I got a Traveler out next turn, giving me a decent amount of draws, but it took forever to get the Enterprise staffed and then Duck Blind up and running.
Mr Carter attempted first, and hit an Edo Probe and bailed. He moved across to the next Space mission, at the end of the spaceline, and attempted. Hull Breech hit Paxim, who took Karr with him. Ankari Spirits killed One and Neelix.
Next turn, the Spirits killed Tanis and Torres. The Olarra came over and cured the Spirits. Last up under the mission was Macrovirus, which killed Mr Lessing, one of the two remaining folk on the Equinox. Olarra swooped in for the solve, with a couple of Mission Specialists, Collect Omicron Particles was solved for 45 points.
Returning to the now Edo Probe-less mission on the next turn, it was reattempted. Lack Of Prep was easily passed, and Q was passed too. Study Protonebula was solved with 2 Mission Specialists (I make that as 40 points, but it was put in as 50 - remember kids: be vigilant).
At this point I probably ought to have attempted, but I waited one turn more.
Pfti attempted a Planet mission this time. Hanonian Land Eel was passed, Flash Plasma Storm killed Tanis, Kes and Neelix. Denevan Neural Pancakes killed Angelo Tassoni, Paxim, Hajur and Dr Telek R'Mor (Booya!), and the other ship couldn't come over and solve that turn.
I had HQ: Secure Homeworld on both homeworlds, so I attempted Intelligence Operation with all the folk that were there.
Limara'son was Kobayashi'd. Hippocratic Oath was first up, but with no other planets in the Gamma Quadrant, the Dilemma Resolution Guide said it was just discarded. I lucked out there! Especially with no Medical present... Kira Founder and Odo Founder were chosen by the Kelvans. Odo Founder got the brunt of the Show Of Force. Last up was Medical Crisis. Alas, as already stated: no Medical.
Most of the Enterprise-E crew went to Earth. Billy Riker, Geordi, and Leyton Founder (it was him or Krajensky Founder, the latter looked more helpful for the mission attempt) took the E back away. Geordi peeked at the first card before he left: Hippocratic Oath. Oh well... Beverly Crusher took a short walk next door to Investigate Massacre, by the Duck Blind fellas. Kelvan Show Of Force Alyssa and Deanna were chosen, Alyssa died. With all the Medical gone, Medical Crisis just stopped them all.
Mr Carter solved Restore Victims for 55 points. Added to the 95 recorded points, that took him to 150 and the win.
Good game. |
I am aple to push through missions with high casualties (DNP, Ankari, flash plasma, macrovirus) for 95 points and clear out talax before he is able to start atteptiong. My hippo fizzles in the GQ because of lack of other planets (read the DRG before play me) but his lack of medical lets my med crisis still stop the crew. His geordi sees another hippo at earth. His first attempt at earth is foiled by another med crisis. Next turn everyone can easily solve to end the game |

Round 4 | | Matt Kirk | FL (-100) |
Round 4 - vs CaptMDKirk:
Mr Kirk was playing Terran Empire with Fed/Baj Treaty, which seemed like a clever combination. He seeded the Bajoran Wormhole: Mirror Universe in the Doorway Phase, which gave me 2 recurring useless cards. I thought from the Mirror missions and the Alpha Cardassian missions he was playing Alliance. I regret not putting the Stellar Core Fragment combo under a mission he didn't attempt.
I realized I'd been playing my deck wrong, and shouldn't have been downloading the Dominion Support Personnel to the Enterprise...
Got Deyos, Surprise Party and Traveler Transcendence in opening hand. Played Surprise Party, with Deyos next turn. Didn't use Defend Homeworld, DHing Worf early would have turned out helpful.
I got lots of Dominion in play early on (but not O'Brien or even many Fed Infiltrators), the only Fed Infiltrator to even visit my hand was Bashir Founder. He went for free to the Dominion HQ.
Mr Kirk attempted first, at Mirror Bajor. Overseer Odo got through Founder Secret, Bareil (6 skills) was picked by Caretaker's Guests, but a Ref download shuffled the deck, killing only 1 personnel (Overseer Odo: I think I killed both TMW'd people). That mission ended up and easy 30 points.
Here I got my Secure Homeworld on Intelligence Operation. I attempted, abandoned with Edo Probe.
Matt attempted Mine Dilithium. Hanonian Land Eel was passed, Flash Plasma Storm killed Mr Andrews and Chief Surgeon McCoy (nice storm!). DNP picked Tabor, First Officer Spock and Li Nalas, a Bajoran Phaser saved the pointy-eared devil. The mission was solved (+30, Kirk on 60). Edo Probe went away. Kirk Daboed, got 6 points.
The Dominion reattempted the homeworld, passed Lack Of Prep, hit Dead End.
The Mirror Mob hit the AQ, attempted Verify Evidence.
Hull Breech got Ensign Davis and Mr Sisko. Ankari Spirits killed Marauder and FO Spock.
Enterprise-E was finally staffed, headed to the GQ. Drew into Picard, who could have got the E to a mission on the return journey.
Surmak Ren and Shakaar Edon fell to the mighty Ankari Spirits.
With much shuffling of crew and Multidimensionally Transporting, the Spirits were cured, and the mission was reattempted.
Macrovirus hit, taking out a Science (rendering the dilemma uncurable), but the mission was then easily solved by Kira Nerys + equipment. This took Matt to 101 points, and the game.
Guess I didn't really do a lot (unless you count the feeble attempting and the 3 Masakas), but I did enjoy the game. I like seeing how dilemma combos do, even if they don't do great. I've reused a few combos lately, so really needed to change them up a bit. Good game.
Final score: 101-0 to CaptMDKirk. |

Closing Thoughts |
Well I obviously hoped to do better, but you know how it is when you miss some crucial things in deckbuilding... Note to self, spend more time on decks and don't leave them til the last minute... (ah rats, need to finish the Random Enterprise-E deck...) |
