Introduction

I was curious! Never played actual Warp Speed before (sealed nor constructed), even though I played many games at 'Impulse Speed', my self-developed derivate of WS; to teach with, and for new players to practice with. So, I just had to try this out.

This was one of the very first batch of tourneys that I registered for (it seems, on 2020.12.19). Due to time constraints (Too! Much! Trekking!), I was quite late in finishing my deck (started on 21.03.24, finished on the day of the first game). But it was worth the time, though -- both for the games, as well as for the deck(building).

See deck list for some notes on its construction!

Round 1Oliver ThustFL (-35)

g245 (210407): Resulting in a FW 70-35 for BashirCdr (Oliver), this was a very close, exciting, and 'GG' good game! First time playing Oliver, and Warp Speed as well. We practiced my German a bit beforehand; and talked a little about classical, Russian, and Baltic music.

I made some poor play choices (rather: just the one?) but the deck performed as it should. Bashir had some surprises in seeding and playing, and it was a tight game. He had a lot of tough luck with my dilemmas, and chose to battle me. I could use my escape pod!

I played and ferried around on all my ships (4 total), and had 2 destroyed. In the end, it was a race that he won. I didn't get out my 2nd Astro (the mistake) and blew up my last remaining feasible ship when I flew into a gravitational hazard while already damaged, because I thought I had the 2nd Astro aboard... but it wouldn't have mattered at all, it seems -- he was faster to the win with his Law cracking Implication (just as I had done it -- with the Magistrate).

I got to play Rebi and Azan, venerable Kes, and Neelix; but it were both copies of Suder that really got to see some action! He died as a miserable, tragic red shirt in my first attempt, only to resurface later, and be a hero. You go, Lon!

Nice game all around, a good and solid christening for my deck, and a succesfull and fun first Warp Speed "spiel"!

Round 2Tim GerrardFL (-95)

g247 (210410): Tim 'grandar' Gerrard. Also a new 'face'! (Should I say, 'voice'?) We had spoken before, though; via PM. The game was smooth, started good for me (mainly due to dilemmas) but then my game slumped due to draw deck bad luck and some well-placed dilemmas. I had lost too many people due to the Trabe/Kazon Conference dilemma, I think -- and my multiple Diplomacy and a Law (for Implication) kept hiding from my eagerly grabbing hand.

An honest, 'simple' game IMO, that I seemed to start out quite well in, but perhaps I was careless. In any case, nice to have played! And learnt some stuff again, as usual.

The chat afterwards -- at 1h shorter, Warp Speed seems to leave a bit more time for friendly banter, LOL! -- was also nice, hearing more about Tim's personal experiences with 1e and 2e, and where he came from, game-wise.

Round 3Michael Van BreemenFL (-60)

g251 (210417): Not much to tell here. Ninja got done snuck up behind me and bash my head in with very fastishly soon quickness. The game was over in less time than it took you to read this sentence. (Alright; and the previous one. Let keep it realistic.)

I was ship-locked. (I do stand by my deck; it worked fine last 2 games, I was just unlucky on the draw. Which I accept for this format.) It was a nice and relaxing gig after Ninja and my previous game -- which was the 11724 event (Open, 1-day, League).

And as in game 250 (also today, also with MvB) Combs got to make yet another appearance to earn his keep in they day's Ach-hunting -- this time, as Penk.

Round 4ByeBY (0)

I got a bye. :-(

Very disappointing; especially in this nice little tourney. (And to think that, a few weeks ago, I was very happy with my first one, for the Achievement! The irony.)

Closing Thoughts

Even with a bye, I ended up near the bottom. Still, had great fun with this event and format. As said, I had a bit of trouble 'bonding' with this deck. But that soon remedied itself, and the matches themselves were great. Less pressure, and less time-consuming than regular games. IRL, I think the game time would be too short for me; but now, it was just about and around the minimum. (I'll always vote for longer games, honestly; but in this game, there's too short and there's way too short.)

Yeah, when I imminently return (a few months from now?) after my self-imposed exile (a/k/a "early retirement"), I would see myself playing this format again.
